The woman lay on the kitchen floor.

My heart pounded in my chest. Would she get up this time?

She did, rising slowly, her back to me. My throat closed.

But when she turned, it wasn’t my mother’s face. My stepmother, her expression hurt, whined, “Why did you go behind our backs, Judith?”

A seventeen-year-old me stood frozen, no words coming into my head or out of my mouth. I knew she was referring to my petition for emancipation.

I looked down. Somehow, there was another woman on the floor. She didn’t move.

My stepmother stared down at her and cried, “How could you do this to us?”

Hot pressure surged in my chest. This time, words formed. How could she do this to you? Look at what you all did to her!

But when I opened my mouth to yell those words, something else came out instead. A howling sound.

I jolted partway upright. Painful pinpricks punctured my chest, through the oversized tee shirt I sleep in. The kitten hung on, yowled again in my face.

I flopped back onto my pillow. “It’s okay, baby.” I stroked the soft fur of her back.

She slumped down, the pinpricks subsiding, and purred quietly. After a moment, she belly-crawled forward until she could reach my face with her tongue. It was slightly raspy as she licked my cheeks.

With a jolt, I realized she was licking away tears. She purred louder.

I should put her back on her bed. That was my last thought until morning.
