Chapter Sixty-One

Day 33

‘As some of you know,’ began DCI Farlowe at the morning briefing, ‘several of our colleagues had dangerous encounters with the Albanian gang yesterday. DI Thorpe and DC Adeyemo were deliberately rammed and their vehicle immobilised with a shotgun. DS Vaughan was also shot at and nearly killed. DI Thorpe has mild concussion. She will be back tomorrow and I’m glad to see Addy and Jack back at work unharmed today.’

The team applauded.

‘Tragically,’ continued Farlowe, ‘the day ended with a double murder and a provoked shooting, which the media will, no doubt, call suicide by cop,’

‘But why, guv?’ asked Addy. ‘Unless we could prove conspiracy all we had him on was handling stolen goods and, maybe, money laundering. He denied any involvement in the assaults and attempted murder.’

‘That’s right,’ added Martin. ‘It doesn’t make a lot of sense. Delvina would have got about five years, tops, and been out in less than three. And why shoot his underlings?’

‘Perhaps he thought they’d betrayed him by surrendering,’ suggested Mel. ‘Apparently, he shouted “traitors” at them in Albanian before he fired.’

‘We thought he was the big man,’ said Jack. ‘But suppose he was part of a bigger operation and feared reprisals for getting caught. These Albanian gangs don’t look kindly on mistakes, especially when they cost them a lot of money. A clean death from a gunshot could be better than something really nasty happening to him inside. There’s a lot of Albanians in British prisons.’

‘Good point,’ agreed Farlowe.

‘But we still don’t know who tried to kill Trev and Phil, do we?’ said Martin.

‘No. Maybe we never will,’ replied Farlowe. ‘Unfortunately, Mel’s video was too blurred to be useful. The scrapyard seems abandoned, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Albanians working there have gone back home or moved on to another town. Some of them were probably here illegally.

‘So far, we’ve recovered about eight thousand pounds’ worth of stolen converters and couple of grand’s worth of HCFCs. There could be more, but it’s not safe to search further without specialist equipment. We’ll keep it sealed until someone takes it over. We did a warrant on the warehouse and found another cache of cats plus a pistol. We’re still looking at the other scrapyards. It’s a slow process.

‘Now. We’ve still got work to do. Have we found out where the metals go yet?’

‘Some progress, guv,’ said Trevor. ‘From the documents we found in the offices, it seems that Delvina Recycling regularly sends smallish loads of scrap to a recycling plant in the Netherlands. The type of metal isn’t specified, but I spoke to the Dutch police, who have suspicions about the site. They think the owners handle stolen precious metals. Nothing’s been proven, but they think it’s dodgy. I’ve been in touch with the Environment Agency’s international waste shipments people in Warrington, who told me that this type of scrap is a green list waste, so they don’t need a permit, or have to notify anyone, when they export it to the EU.
