Reginald knocked on Nikkiâs door about an hour before sunrise. She opened the door to find him covered in blood, smelling like sewer, his shirt in shreds and his pants not much more substantial than a grass skirt. His hair was packed with dirt and gore and had wedged up into a fauxhawk before hardening.
He crossed the room, slapped an assortment of shiny metal balls into Nikkiâs palm, and began to undress on a threadbare area rug. Once he was done, he balled the rug up and put it near the trashcan, then sat nude on the couch.
Nikki stared at him.
âI donât want to talk about it,â he said.
But they did, briefly, with Reginald simply trying to keep up with his own memories as he spoke. He was exhausted. At some point â possibly in the middle of a sentence â he fell asleep.
An indeterminate amount of time later, Reginald awoke to find that heâd been rubbed somewhat cleaner and dressed in pajamas. The clock on the wall indicated that the sun must be up, but Nikki was awake, a cordless phone in her hand.
âSheâs fine,â said Nikki, raising the phone.
âWhoâs fine?â
âClaireâs mother. You told me to call around?â
Reginald sat up. He felt hung over. He rubbed his head, feeling as if heâd overtaxed it. All of last night was there inside of his mind, but it was foggy, and it hurt to think. His mouth felt dry. There was an empty Cheetos bag in front of him. He remembered annihilating the Cheetos before sleep took him, and of showing them no mercy.
âOh, right.â He put both hands on his forehead.
Nikki walked to the couch and sat next to him. She tried to run a hand through his hair. It was hard and stiff, so she ran her hand over the top of it instead, like rubbing a turtleâs shell.
âSome weird stuff happened last night,â said Reginald.
âYou said you stopped time.â
âNot literally. But thatâs what it felt like.â
Nikki punched him in the side of the head.
âOw, hell!â he yelled.
âSorry. I wanted to see if you were still impervious to pain. Apparently youâre not. But last night, you kept telling me to kick you in the balls, and you just kept laughing all the while. Do you remember?â
âYes.â It had seemed hilarious at the time, but heâd been in no condition to judge hilarity when heâd come home. Heâd been half dead, which was saying something for a person who was already mostly dead even when fully functional.
Nikki seemed unsure what to say next, so she again held up the phone. âAnyway, sheâs at Mercy. Apparently an ambulance showed up and found her where your buddies described. Theyâre saying she was stabbed.â
âStabbed?â
Nikki nodded. âThen, I told them I was Victoriaâs sister and asked what they were doing for her. The man I talked to didnât want to tell me, but I cry well on cue. He looked some stuff up and said that they gave her a bunch of blood and stitched up her wounds, and that she should be fine.
