‘What about vehicles? We’ll need one for me and Lex to visit the house.’

‘You could taxi it. Or we could drop you close by and you walk up.’

‘We’ll get no respect turning up in an Uber,’ said Harper. ‘A man like Sazak isn’t even going to open the gate.’

‘Lex is right,’ said Shepherd. ‘I’ll call Michael, last time I was here he rented me a no-questions-asked Mercedes for cash. I’ll get him to do the same again. So we just wait now to hear from Mustard?’

Taylor nodded. ‘He’ll call and he’ll follow to check that he’s heading home and then he’ll pull back.’

‘Okay, great. Lex and I’ll grab some grub in the lobby.’

Shepherd and Harper were in the lobby bar finishing off their meal when Warren-Madden arrived with the rented Mercedes. Shepherd had ordered a steak sandwich, Harper had gone for the Mövenpick basket – a selection of fish nuggets, chicken nuggets, beef sausages, jalapeño poppers, onion rings and French fries, with three sauces. Harper had polished it off in record time and then ordered a chocolate sundae.

Warren-Madden put a Mercedes keyfob on the table. ‘It’s in the car park. A white C-Class.’

‘Thanks,’ said Shepherd. ‘Do you want to eat?’

‘I’m good,’ said Warren-Madden. ‘Are things progressing?’

‘Just waiting for the call.’ As he was speaking his mobile phone rang. ‘Speak of the devil.’

‘I’ll leave you to it,’ said the MI6 officer. ‘Let me know if you need anything else.’

As he walked away, Shepherd took the call. It was Taylor. ‘Mustard says Sazak is on the move,’ he said. ‘Looks like he’s heading straight home.’

‘I’ll be right up.’ Shepherd signed for the bill as Harper bolted down the last of his ice cream. They took the lift up to Taylor’s room where the team were adjusting their holsters and checking their weapons. Taylor and Sage were already wearing ballistic vests under their shirts and Joe Ellis was putting one on.

Ireland had taken one of the MAC-11s and Joe Ellis had a Glock.

‘Help yourself,’ said Taylor, pointing at the remaining guns.

‘We can’t go in armed, or wearing vests,’ said Harper. ‘It’ll show a lack of faith.’

Shepherd picked up a Beretta and tucked it into his belt. ‘We can leave the guns in the car. They’ll pat us down but I doubt they’ll search the car. And yes, you’re right about the vests.’

‘I don’t think you should be going in without guns or vests,’ said Taylor.

Shepherd shook his head. ‘Lex is right. We can’t go in there as if we’re looking for trouble.’

‘At least take comms with you so you can call us in if there’s a problem.’

‘And what do we say when they find the radio?’ asked Harper. ‘We have to go in clean. First thing they’ll do is search us and if we have anything on us that we shouldn’t it’ll be Goodnight Irene.’

‘So what’s the signal if you need us?’ asked Taylor.

‘I’ll throw something through the window,’ said Harper. ‘Ideally one of the heavies.’

‘Is he serious?’ Taylor asked Shepherd.

‘It’s always hard to tell with Lex,’ said Shepherd.
