CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Mary Cage felt the chill of the autumn air bite at her skin as she and Jake approached the Henderson residence, a quaint suburban home now tainted by tragedy. The once cheerful yellow paint seemed to take on a somber tone under the weight of the family's anguish. Even before they stepped inside, Mary could hear the muffled sobs that permeated through the closed front door. She exchanged a brief, determined glance with Jake before pushing it open.

Inside, the atmosphere clung heavily around them, a suffocating blanket of grief, supplemented with a hope that she could still be found alive. Photographs of Rachel — smiling, vibrant, full of life — adorned the walls and tables, each one a stark contrast to the despondent faces of her family huddled in the living room. Her mother's eyes were red-rimmed and haunted, a physical manifestation of a soul tortured by the cruelty of uncertainty. Her father sat beside her, stoic yet shattered, his hands trembling as he clutched at an old sweater — presumably Rachel's. The raw emotion of the scene fortified Mary's resolve; this was not just about finding a missing person, it was about restoring the broken threads of a family tapestry torn apart by a faceless predator.

"Mrs. Henderson, Mr. Henderson," Mary began, her voice soft but steady, "I know this is a difficult time, but any information you can provide may help us find Rachel."

The couple sat across from her, their faces etched with worry and despair, clinging onto any sliver of hope. Rachel's younger sister, a trembling teenager with tear-stained cheeks, sat beside them, holding onto a crumpled tissue as if it were her lifeline.

As Mary observed the family's palpable distress, she knew she had to approach this delicately. "I can only imagine how challenging this must be for you," she continued, her eyes conveying empathy as she sought to establish a connection with Rachel's parents and her sister.

“Can I ask if the name ‘Bright Horizon’ means anything to you?” Mary asked, her eyes flicking from the missing woman’s mother to her father.

In that moment of shared silence laden with unspoken fears and unanswered questions, it was Rachel's sister who broke the heaviness in the air with a quivering voice. "Um...Rachel...she...she mentioned something last week," she hesitated, her words barely audible amidst the stifling atmosphere in the room. The girl took a deep breath before continuing, "She talked about Bright Horizon...said they were helping her with something... fertility issues."

Mary's mind sharpened, honing in on the detail like a hawk sighting prey from afar. The common thread weaving through the lives of the victims, that along with the birthday celebrations and the charm bracelets. They were all linked, all revolved around birth and fertility. But how? And why?

Yet despite the growing pattern, the fact that the clinic was front and center of the case, Mary's instincts still screamed that Dr. Kurt Langley, despite his questionable ethics, was not their abductor. Someone else was pulling the strings, someone who perhaps lurked in the shadows of the clinic's hallways, unnoticed until now.
