Because a newborn vampire army is preparing to lay siege to the unsuspecting town of Forks, so Bella, Jacob, and Edward hide while the Cullens and the Quileute wolves join forces to battle the army.

Aside from the love triangle, Eclipse is about the power of the Cullens’ bond and the temporary allegiance of the wolf pack and the vampires. We learn more about the Cullen family in flashbacks and what makes them the ultimate loyal, nonbiological family. Carlisle lived for a time with the Volturi and turned Edward into a vampire when Edward was dying of the Spanish influenza. Rosalie was gang raped and left for dead by her fiancée until Carlisle saved her. She later avenges the crimes and murders each rapist one by one. Emmett was gored by a bear, Alice was confined to a mental asylum, and Jasper was a major in the Civil War. Meanwhile, Bella decides that Edward is the only one she truly loves, and they continue to declare their undying love for each other. “The outside world holds no interest for me without you,” Edward tells her. At the end of the book, once the vicious vampire army and Bella’s nemesis are defeated, Bella decides that yes, she will marry Edward, but he must promise to have sex with her as a human first.
