It seemed hours before Gwen, still unconscious, was carted away, all the statements were taken and the crime scene had become a mess of print powder and crime tape. I hoped I'd have the chance to interview her—satisfy my infernal curiosity about the whys and wherefores of her other victims. It could be that Jason's rejection had sent her on a spree or that she was using others to store up mojo to bring him back to her side, but what mattered right then was that Daniel was sitting next to me at one of the abandoned tables, a bottle of late harvest riesling and a single glass in front of him.

"I suddenly seem to have time on my hands again," he said, that glint back in his eyes. "You wouldn't happen to know how I can spend it?"

"You've probably got a report to type, an invoice to mail, another case awaiting your attention. Don't let me keep you," I answered, enjoying the breeze, knowing deep down that he wasn't going anywhere.

"Margo." Daniel took my hand and looked deep into my eyes. I blinked. "I just needed to catch my breath. You're—"

"Amazing? Beautiful? Magnificent?" The marquis had called me all of those things.

"Kind of a hardass," he said with a laugh.

I smiled, thinking that was a far more personal compliment.

"You're never going to cut me any slack. You're not easy to be with, but you're worth it. I've decided I like the challenge."

I was about to refute him when he leaned in and kissed me. Hard.

I finally got a taste of my riesling. And it truly was the nectar of the gods.
