I began with an assessment of the library from the ground floor. If all the doors to the troublemaking books were locked and anything out of place was stacked away, all I had to do was stop Laney from wandering out of my sight and I just might be able to keep her from getting into trouble.

That is, if I could get the library to cooperate with me… and persuade my family not to use any magic in front of Laney.

“It’ll have to be on a weekend,” I said to Estelle. “Next weekend, maybe.”

“Works for me,” said Estelle. “I can hold off on using magic for a day or two. Aunt Candace probably won’t leave her room, and as long as Cass’s animals are on their best behaviour, we’ll be in the clear.”

“Just as long as I get her into the library without running into anyone outside.”

There was just one slight issue: if Laney was already on the vampires’ radar, then waiting until the following weekend to invite her to visit might be leaving it too late. It didn’t help that my phone signal had disappeared again, leaving our communication lines cut off.

“If it’s a Sunday morning, nobody will be around anyway.” Estelle faced the shelves and made a sweeping gesture, and they moved to the side. “There, try that.”

I faced the bookshelves and held up my Biblio-Witch Inventory, pressing my fingertip to the word move.

The shelves stubbornly refused to budge. I hung my head. “I guess the library thinks you’re more senior than I am.”

Estelle pursed her lips. “I still think you should take Laney somewhere other than the library. Or Ivory Beach as a whole.”

“I think I was doomed from the instant I mentioned there was a library at all,” I admitted. “I mean, if our positions were reversed, I’d be mildly annoyed if I found out she’d been hiding a secret library from me, magical or otherwise. Granted, she isn’t quite as obsessive over books as I am, but still.”

“The important thing is to make sure she’s safe, right?” She lowered her wand. “Hey—Xavier’s here.”

I abandoned the bookshelves and crossed the lobby to greet my boyfriend. He caught me in a hug, and I wrapped my arms around him. “Hey.”

“I was worried about you.” He released me. “My boss didn’t tell me about the vampire’s death until he got back at dawn.”

“He just walked out without telling you where he was going?” I asked.

“He does that a lot,” he commented. “It’s usually work-related, but I should have guessed something would go wrong at the party. Gathering a large number of vampires in one place when someone was already killed in the region struck me as a risky move.”

“Not just vampires,” I said. “Humans, too. Including normals.”

His brows shot up, and he listened with concern as I told him everything from my conversation with Evangeline to what I’d learned from eavesdropping on those humans.

Xavier was quiet for a moment after I’d finished. “So you don’t think Evangeline was responsible for the murder.
