Chapter Twenty

Learning Patience, Laying Groundwork

LEO WAS STILL OFF SOMEWHERE when we got home. I called people together in the great room. Skeeter came up from the lab. Kat came out of the kitchen, dusted with flour. Sharon was already in there, reading through her email. Mikah and Berto came out of their room. “I’m so happy!” I told them. “Frank is awake and breathing on his own. His healing is finally kicking in. He may be home in the next few days if it all goes well!” There were hugs and congratulations all around— and yes, I did put my mask back on.

“Has anyone heard from Leo?” I asked.

“He said he might be out for a while,” Skeeter said. “He didn’t say what he was working on. He said a special project came up.”

My belly gnawed at me again. Chef fixed soup and sandwiches for me and Cordie even though we were late for lunch. “I am pleased your young man is regaining his health,” he said.

“Thanks, Chef,” I said. “I can’t wait to have him back home.”

After I finished my lunch, Chef reappeared with a tiny crystal dish of fluffy chocolate mousse. He presented it to me with a flourish.

“Ooooh! How did you know it was my favorite?” I asked him.

He smiled mysteriously and disappeared back into his kitchen.

Cordie didn’t get any and I didn’t offer to share. There’s sisterhood and there’s chocolate.
