Standing, Meredith held his hands above his head, arched his back and yawned.

“You haven’t got a clue, have you?” Tom Seaton patted Ed’s shoulder. “What if we got you to do a photofit, would that help?”

“No. I was never with them. They were just blokes, dressed like council workers, heads down because of any CCTV. The best I can do is agree one of them might have been Deegan on the Exeter job. But that’s purely based on his build.”

“This is getting us nowhere. And we’re wasting time. I’ll check in with Patsy and go and knock on some doors.”

“Anyone in particular?” Trump had now spoken to his uncle, and was uncomfortable having to keep tracks on Meredith.

“Some faces from the past. A few who owe me favours, and a few who were tight with Jenkins before he went down. Red, get out the way, I need to get some addresses.” Waiting until Ed had moved away from the screen, he dropped into the vacated chair. “Now, who shall we start with?”

Trump pulled his ringing phone from his pocket. “Sergeant Exton. Let’s hope he has some news.” Having greeted Exton, he listened for several minutes, jotting notes on a pad in front of him. “Thank you. Not sure what use that is, we’ll let you know if Jenkins or his car turn up in Bristol.” Hanging up, he shrugged at the team.

“No joy, I’m assuming?” Dave Rawlings slumped down further in his chair.

“Not really. He’s emailing confirmation of all this, but now we have Jenkins’ home address, the address of a seedy gym he owns, the local boys have never had any problems or complaints about, and the fact that Mrs Kate Jenkins runs two hostels in the city and if such a thing existed has a five-star rating from the local authority. Set them up when Jenkins was inside, both registered and licenced by the authorities, all above board. They are both registered in her name.”

“Well they would be. I know times are tough on the housing front, but I doubt even Jenkins could swing a CRB check. Glad Kate got herself sorted out, I’m surprised she took him back. Where was I?” Meredith clicked the mouse and pulled the keyboard forward.

“Do you know her?” Tom Seaton picked up the empty mugs. “I can’t remember us having much to do with her. I’ll make more coffee.”

“Only because of the case. She seemed a nice woman, I felt sorry for her. Black with two, now shut up and let me think.”

Ed had found an empty seat, and folding his arms on the desk in front, rested his head and tried to grab some sleep. Rawlings had disappeared and Trump stood behind Meredith.

“I’m not going to keep secrets from you, Trump.”

“No, I know that. But this will save you repeating yourself. What are we going to do with your brother while we’re out tracking this lot down?”

“I have no . . . actually I do. We’ll drop him at Peggy’s that way he can keep an eye on his mother and vice versa.
