Chapter Six

Zack entered the room with a tray full of drinks, prompting Cassie to grin widely at him.

"You're my favourite right now," she said as she grabbed the cup with her name on and took a sip of her favourite tea.

He kissed her gently on the cheek before pushing the tray with the rest of the drinks into the middle of the table so the others could grab theirs.

"Do we really need another briefing?" Issac asked.

"Cassie and Zack said they had important information for us," Hadrian pointed out. "So we're going to hear them out and see what they say." He raised an eyebrow at the two of them.

"Ladies first," Zack said, gesturing for Cassie to take the lead with her suspicions.

"I went back to the canal last night..."

Issac sucked in a deep breath.

"And I ran into the victim's sister."

"Was she any more forthcoming than she was in my interview with her?" Hadrian asked. "It was like trying to draw blood from a stone. I thought people wanted to find out what happened to their loved ones?"

"I think that might be part of the problem," Cassie responded. "She doesn't want us to dig too deeply."

"Ah. You suspect her." Issac leaned back in his seat, taking a sip of his drink. A thoughtful expression flitted across his face as he considered what Cassie was saying.

"There's a chance it was an accident still, but she definitely knows something. She said she could feel where the body went into the canal because the water told her."

"Hmm. Is that possible?" Zack asked.

Cassie shrugged. "I have no idea, I've never talked to a siren about their magic before. Perhaps we need to ask the High Council for a full account of what each type of paranormal is capable of? Without that, I feel like we're going to come up against problems like this regularly."

Hadrian nodded. "You're right. I'll talk to Richard about it and see if he'll arrange it for us."

"I don't see him saying no," Issac said.

Cassie didn't either. Their liaison with the High Council had almost as much of a stake in the success of the PCI as they did. He'd want to give them every possible tool to do that. She hoped.

"She also talked with a lot of contempt about the operation Jessica went through. Apparently, a lot of the sirens coming onto land are having similar things done to stop them from enchanting their friends and the other people they're around," she said.

"Interesting," Zack muttered.

"And more than she told me during our interview," Hadrian added. "I felt like she was holding back."

Cassie nodded. "Perhaps this is the reason."

"Do you remember where she said Jessica went in?" the vampire asked.

"Yes."

"We should go later and see if there's anything we can pick up," he said.

"I doubt we'll find anything else. I did a spell before Hilary arrived and it didn't turn up anything unusual."

"That was risky." There was a hint of disapproval in Hadrian's voice, but she could see the slight smile on his face that belayed it.
