CHAPTER 15: BACK TO THE HORIZON

Wes’ Perspective

It had been a heavy couple of days. Reuniting with eight people for the first time in what had felt like over a year for me was not the thirty-minute episode of teary hugs that television had promised it to be. I had so many conversations with Mother and Rachel and Davelon and Christine and Rachel’s friends and the entire family that my head hurt just thinking about it.

That said, it was pretty awesome to find out that all eight of them wanted to do what they could to help me. Everyone had decided that my fight was their fight, and even though they didn’t know anything about swinging a weapon or using magic, they were determined to do what they could in helping us retake Avalon’s sister worlds from the assholes that had ruined our own planet.

So I had gotten to watch Stell do her magic and awaken eight new Challengers into their Ideals. It was just as amazing as when I had participated in the process, except that performing it with eight people had created a kaleidoscopic thundercloud of colorful lights that had sparked as they drifted by each other.

I couldn’t even tell what Ideals had clung to most of my old friends. Not for the most part, at least. I thought I saw motes of Fire and Earth magic settle around Davelon, and maybe motes of Air magic settle around Christina. Rachel, impossibly, seemed to gain motes of all four Foundational Ideals: Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.

The rest, I had no idea what they gained. Two advanced Ideals settled directly over my mother, crackling upon proximity with each other, but settling down as they descended into her body. She closed her eyes to process them, and I caught the small smile that formed on her face for a moment.

More surprising was a single, colorless mote drifting toward Chris, who had been lingering at the edge of the crowd like a misbehaving student stuck in the corner. That wasn’t supposed to happen; Stell wasn’t even trying to do anything to him. He had already acclimated to Avalon and had chosen to Descend, but it appeared that he was Rising instead.

That single mote had tracked him down during the Challenger’s awakenings, to his horror. It had weaved its way past people to get to him, then dodged his own hand as he tried to bat it away, and finally had sunk into his chest.

Part of me wanted to go over and grab him, then shake him until he explained what the hell just happened, but one look at his face convinced me that he had no idea himself. That meant someone like Stell, Guineve, or Breena would be better suited to investigating the matter.

Besides, he and I had already talked.

So I focused on the more important fact that we now had eight more Earthborn Challengers.

Stell and I decided to divide them into two teams. My mother and Davelon’s parents would stay here to
