CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Malcolm

This can’t be a coincidence.

The same name has shown up twice now. On the same day.

Now Rebecca is standing here next to me. I feel terrible. I don’t want her to blame herself. Rebecca is sensitive, withdrawn. I’ve tried my best to bring her more out of her shell. I’m no psychologist, so I’ve employed things that have worked for me.

Video games. Movies. Books.

Really, any type of escapism will do. Honestly, it’s been rather amazing watching Rebecca thrive over the last several months. She’s grown so much, become so strong, and now here I am looking at a piece of paper that can undo all of that.

“She needs to know,” Gibbs tells me.

I agree. Looking into Rebecca’s eyes, those beautiful green eyes, my hearts thumps loudly in my chest. I’m proud of the fact Rebecca hasn’t just read my mind to retrieve the information herself. I can’t say I’d have that kind of restraint if in her shoes.

“Rebecca,” I begin. “Your—” The ground shakes.

What the hell?

I turn to Alton. “What did you do?”

He holds his hands up defensively. “Nothing. I—”

The ceiling is torn away. Sunlight immediately pours in, blinding us. I draw my weapon with one hand, pointing it upward. I use the other to shield my eyes. Instinctively, I know Gibbs is doing the same.

“Alton!” I yell. “Get Rebecca to safety!”

I don’t take the time to see if he does as I ask. I don’t want to take my focus away from whatever tore the roof off the building. I take a moment to process that thought.

Something tore the roof off the building.

My eyes adjust to the sunlight. A dark shape is visible through the hole. Floating above us. A cape flapping in the wind.

“Holy shit,” I say.

It’s Madame Liberty.

Before I can form another thought, two cars fly through the ceiling. I jump to the side, one car landing where I once stood. I look around, seeing Gibbs already getting to her feet.

She aims through the hole and yells “Drop her!”

A millisecond later, she’s firing her weapon. I follow suit, unleashing a volley of bullets toward Madame Liberty.

Nothing is happening.

We stop firing as Madame Liberty just floats there, unscathed. I don’t know how she deflected our bullets, but she doesn’t have a single bit of damage. She didn’t even flinch. My eyes have adjusted to the sunlight enough I can see the lower part of her face. The part not obscured by the visor.

She’s smiling.

I knew these Legion clowns were up to no good. This one just hurled a car at us which doesn’t really bother me. What bothers me is the why? Why is she doing this? The only thing I can think of is this trip to Alton’s hideout. Maybe there’s something here they don’t want us to know.

“What now?” I ask Gibbs.

“Uh. Run.” She rushes past me through an open door.

I didn’t even notice it was there. I follow, doing a quick check of the room to see if Alton or Rebecca are still here. They appear to have gotten away.
