To the surprise of likely no one, I ended up at Jordan’s place. I didn’t want to impose myself on him, but he had said “stay as long as you’d like” the other day, so I thought maybe he’d be cool with me crashing at his place until I found a new apartment. Hopefully one not in a crack den.

I knocked and it took a few minutes before he answered his door. When he did, he was breathing hard, a sweat covered shirt sticking to his abs. I assumed he’d just come from his gym.

“Hey. I didn’t know you were coming over,” he said. He lifted his shirt up a little and used the end to wipe the sweat off his brow. I stared at the flat expanse of stomach that revealed itself. I had to blink my eyes a few times and clear my throat, tried to compose myself.

“No, I didn’t warn you. Sorry,” I said. I looked back up at his eyes. “Can I come in, though?”

He nodded and moved out of the way so I could walk inside. He closed the door behind me.

“What’s the stupidest possible thing a person can do in Vegas aside from losing a whole lot of money at a casino?”

“Getting shellfish from a buffet?” he suggested.

“Not quite what I was going for.”

“Getting married by an Elvis impersonator?”

“Bingo!” I said.

Jordan’s eyes went wide.

“You’re not suggesting that you and I -”

I cut him off by holding up my hand and laughing.

“No, no, no. I’m not suggesting that we fake-elope. Lola just got back from Vegas, and she has a gold band around a very important finger.”

“Her middle one?” he joked.

“No.”

He shrugged.

“Okay, well. Good for her. That means you’ll have the apartment to yourself from now on? I mean, that’s a good thing, right? You could have just sent me a text. Not that it’s not nice to see you, but I was in the middle of -”

“Nope!” I interrupted him again. “I don’t get the place to myself. Apparently I have to move out by the end of April.”

He looked confused.

“But… It is April. Right now. This month. It’s April.”

“You are so much smarter than Lola,” I said. “So here’s the thing - I was never officially on the lease to begin with. I had zero paperwork to sign when I moved in. Our situation was more of a cash under the table kind of thing. I have nothing to stand on here. No contract, nothing. And when she told me the news, I was so pissed off that I didn’t text or call anyone, I just went for a drive and I ended up here. I don’t know what to do. I guess I could stay with you, if you’re cool with it. Or I could stay with one of the other people in the Jordan King Backup Band. Maybe Becca would let me crash on her couch. She did say I could come to her if I ever ran into trouble.”

He placed his hands on my shoulders and gave me a smile.
