Chapter Nine

Dorran had tried to work, but he couldn’t focus. His day was shot, and he’d stopped trying after a while. Eli had gotten a phone call from Austin early in the morning, telling him that both he and Lacey were okay and that they were back at her apartment. Eli had gone to work after that, leaving Dorran alone with his thoughts.

That wasn’t a good thing, not this time.

Dorran hadn’t been able to forget what had happened, and he needed to do something. What, though? He hadn’t heard from Lacey again, and he probably wouldn’t. She had to realize that he couldn’t do this anymore, not when things were getting this bad. Still, he wished Lacey had let him know she was okay. They weren’t friends, exactly, but they were something. Not family, not yet, but eventually. That had to mean something, didn’t it?

When Dorran’s phone rang, he rushed to get it, grabbing it and looking at the screen. He smiled in relief when he saw Lacey’s name flash on the screen and answered. “Lacey. Austin told us what happened. How are you?”

“Dorran? I need you. I need help.”

There was so much panic in Lacey’s voice that it got Dorran’s attention right away. “What happened?” Was it the stalker again?

“Austin went to the grocery store. Tony is here. I don’t know what to do. He tried to get in, and I managed to close the door, but he’s still out there, and he’s pounding on my door, and I don’t know what to do.” She sobbed. “Please, Dorran.”

“Have you called Austin yet?”

“I tried, but he didn’t answer.”

“All right.” Dorran was already moving, putting his shoes on and taking his keys from the hook in the entrance. “Call him again. He’s probably closest to you. I’m going to call Eli on my way to your apartment.” Wait. He didn’t have her address. “You need to text me your address before calling Austin, though.”

“I’ll do it. Please. I can’t be here alone, not with Tony doing this.”

“I’ll be there soon as I can. I promise.” Now that he knew what was happening, Dorran could hear Tony pounding on the door and yelling at Lacey. He hated that she had to go through this. “Go as far away from the door as you can. It’s locked, right?”

“Yeah. I locked it as soon as I closed it.”

“Good. Then go to the bedroom or the bathroom. Lock yourself in if you can.” Hopefully, if Tony was trying to hurt her, that would at least slow him down enough that Dorran or Austin would get there before he could do anything.

Dorran wasn’t sure what he would do if he got there first. He wasn’t a fighter. It wasn’t his job. He might get hurt, but he couldn’t abandon Lacey, and it wouldn’t be the first time he got hurt anyway. He was getting used to it.

“I’m scared,” she murmured.

Dorran was scared, too, but he wasn’t going to tell her that. “Call Austin. If he doesn’t
