Chapter 15

Florence slowly pushed herself upward against the tide of pitch black icy water that seemed to press her down into a chilly unreal essence until she burst through into a world of agony and bright lights.

“Doctor, she’s awake.” An elderly woman wearing a halo of red spoke, “can you hear me Ms. Host, can you hear me?” the woman continued.

Florence tried to say yes but instead a groan scraped from her throat as a throbbing burning pain clutched at her legs and tears spilled, hot and sticky down her cheeks.

“We’re going to give you something for the pain,” A male doctor said, his kindly gray eyes conveying compassion, “just hold on.”

A moment later the cold pinch of a needle joined her agonies then a warm trickle raced down her arm to her fingers pushing the chill infinitesimally away.

“I have her bag.” Hunter Tate slid around the corner, his eye locking with hers as he lifted her teal Vera Wang bag.

“Hunter.” She whispered her mind foggy and befuddled as she tried to figure out what had happened. She knew she hadn’t seen him since Sunday, so what was he doing her now.

“Thank you.” A nurse took the bag and began rifling through it looking for her wallet.

“Ms. Host are you allergic to any medications?” the doctors somber, but soothing tone drifted over her.

“No.” she ground through her pain.

“Alright, I’m going to let you go back to sleep now.” The doctor continued, preparing another syringe. “Is there anyone we should call?”

“We’ve already called her mother.” Hunter spoke up, his heart constricting as he watched Florence fighting through the pain to answer.

“Mom.” Florence whispered and more tears poured from her eyes.

Darting around the doctor and nurses Hunter moved to the top of the bed and gently took her hand. “It’ll be alright.” He soothed, “It’ll be alright.”

A warm feeling moved down through the hand that Hunter was holding filtering down her arm and into her chest to meet with the warmth growing from the arm that had received the injection.

“Ms. Host.” The doctor’s voice was still kind but firm. “You have a concussion and both of your legs have been broken.” He looked at her seriously, “do you understand?”

Florence nodded as the warmth began to move through her body and she squeezed Hunter’s hand weakly.

“Good, good.” The doctor spoke, “we’re going to set your legs then check for internal injuries, is that alright with you?”

Again Florence nodded but her head was full of fluff and buzzing bees. “Whatever Hunter says.” Florence said, “I just want to sleep.” Her eyes drifted shut dropping her into sweet oblivion.

“Son, I’ll have to take it that she’s given you consent to make decisions for her until her mother gets here, do you understand?”

“Yes sir.” Hunter croaked feeling the weight of responsibility falling on his shoulders.

“I don’t believe Ms. Host has any life threatening injuries but we still need to run the tests.”

“I’m sure that will be fine.” Hunter said, still holding Florence’s hand in his.

“Alright, will you go with her to X-ray and we’ll take a look at those legs.
