CHAPTER 12
LIZ
Liz looked outside the windows. Massive white steps led up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Even as she watched, a small group of people raced up the stairs, reached the top, and began jumping around with their hands in the air. More than a little confused, Liz turned back to Scott and asked, âWeâre going to a museum?â
âNo, silly! Donât you recognize this place?â Seeing Lizâs bafflement, he added, âYou know, the famous steps featured in the Rocky movie?â
âUm, no. Whoâs Rocky?â
Groaning and theatrically closing his eyes, he let himself out of the car and walked around the front before pulling Lizâs door open and saying, âGet out. I canât believe how sad it is that you donât know about Rocky, but youâre going to have to trust me on this one. You canât come to Philadelphia and miss running up these stairs.â
âRunning up theâScott, no, this isnât a good idea.â Liz could easily imagine all the scenarios where she would trip on the way up. Not only was she far from the athletic type, but her propensity for injuring herself was also off the charts.
âIâll hold your hand. Besides, itâs only seventy-two steps. Weâll be fine! Come on, whereâs your sense of adventure. See, those people are doing it.â
How does he convince me to do the craziest things? âFine,â she replied, grabbing his hand and hauling herself out of the car. She felt a tingle spread through her palm where it contacted Scottâs, yet she ignored it, chalking it up to nerves. âBut if I end up in the hospital, youâre footing the bill.â
Grinning, Scott said, âDeal! Letâs go.â He pulled on her hand until they stood at the bottom of the flight of stairs. They raced up, both breathless and grinning with delight by the time they reached the top. Scott danced around with his hands over his head, acting silly to the point where Liz couldnât help but laugh at his antics.
Liz loved the whole adventure. Holding Scottâs hand the entire way was both reassuring as well as exhilarating. It almost felt like she could feel his energy pulsing through her from the contact. Her mind raced. What might happen if we kissed? What? Where did that come from? Liz stopped that thought train before it went off the rails.
Feeling emboldened, she challenged, âIâll race you back to the car.â Not waiting for his answer, she took the lead, rushing headlong down the steps.
âWhat? No fair! Iâm going to catch you, Liz!â
Her heart raced, adrenaline pumping with the sound of his shoes slapping down on the steps behind her, nearer and nearer. She was going to win. She could hardly believe itâonly seven more steps to go.
Scott flew past her, saying, âLiz, be careful. Your shoeâs untied.â
âHa! Nice try, mister, youâre not going to get me with that oldâoh!â Her dangling shoelace caught on the crack of the last stair, freezing her foot from moving forward, but not before her body had enough momentum to launch her face-first to the concrete.
