CHAPTER 12

LIZ

Liz looked outside the windows. Massive white steps led up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Even as she watched, a small group of people raced up the stairs, reached the top, and began jumping around with their hands in the air. More than a little confused, Liz turned back to Scott and asked, “We’re going to a museum?”

“No, silly! Don’t you recognize this place?” Seeing Liz’s bafflement, he added, “You know, the famous steps featured in the Rocky movie?”

“Um, no. Who’s Rocky?”

Groaning and theatrically closing his eyes, he let himself out of the car and walked around the front before pulling Liz’s door open and saying, “Get out. I can’t believe how sad it is that you don’t know about Rocky, but you’re going to have to trust me on this one. You can’t come to Philadelphia and miss running up these stairs.”

“Running up the—Scott, no, this isn’t a good idea.” Liz could easily imagine all the scenarios where she would trip on the way up. Not only was she far from the athletic type, but her propensity for injuring herself was also off the charts.

“I’ll hold your hand. Besides, it’s only seventy-two steps. We’ll be fine! Come on, where’s your sense of adventure. See, those people are doing it.”

How does he convince me to do the craziest things? “Fine,” she replied, grabbing his hand and hauling herself out of the car. She felt a tingle spread through her palm where it contacted Scott’s, yet she ignored it, chalking it up to nerves. “But if I end up in the hospital, you’re footing the bill.”

Grinning, Scott said, “Deal! Let’s go.” He pulled on her hand until they stood at the bottom of the flight of stairs. They raced up, both breathless and grinning with delight by the time they reached the top. Scott danced around with his hands over his head, acting silly to the point where Liz couldn’t help but laugh at his antics.

Liz loved the whole adventure. Holding Scott’s hand the entire way was both reassuring as well as exhilarating. It almost felt like she could feel his energy pulsing through her from the contact. Her mind raced. What might happen if we kissed? What? Where did that come from? Liz stopped that thought train before it went off the rails.

Feeling emboldened, she challenged, “I’ll race you back to the car.” Not waiting for his answer, she took the lead, rushing headlong down the steps.

“What? No fair! I’m going to catch you, Liz!”

Her heart raced, adrenaline pumping with the sound of his shoes slapping down on the steps behind her, nearer and nearer. She was going to win. She could hardly believe it—only seven more steps to go.

Scott flew past her, saying, “Liz, be careful. Your shoe’s untied.”

“Ha! Nice try, mister, you’re not going to get me with that old—oh!” Her dangling shoelace caught on the crack of the last stair, freezing her foot from moving forward, but not before her body had enough momentum to launch her face-first to the concrete.
