And something tells me"—fine lines creased her forehead—"you two need each other more than you realize."

Alec stared at her, his heart thudding almost painfully in his chest. "Has Christian talked to you? How do you know so much?"

Her laughter was as soft and gentle as she was. "No, I haven't spoken to him since last week, before he left home.

Let's just say I have my own gifts. Now..." She patted his hand. "Let's see what we can do to help you with this travel problem you have." She rose and stepped back onto the stage, this time rummaging through a large tapestry handbag. She pulled a brown bottle from it, then moved to the stage door. "Leslie?" she called.

When a thin young woman appeared, Maura said, "Leslie, be a love, would you, and bring us a couple of bottles of juice out of that cooler you showed me earlier?"

Alec wanted to tell her not to bother, that whatever she thought she could do wouldn't matter. Nothing worked. And he'd probably already overstayed his welcome as it was. He started to rise, but Maura caught him at it.
