Chapter XXVI

Rosalind

California, USA

Shaken from the encounter she could not rationalize, Rosalind had nearly walked to her professor’s door the previous night before recalling Robert had remained at the reception. After having brewed a cup of tea, she had curled up on the sofa in front of the television, placing her head on the armrest. She attempted to close her eyes, but they opened at every creak and rustle of the apartment.

Her alarm came far too early, the watch she had failed to remove buzzing on her left arm as she partially fell off the sofa. Jerking awake, her eyes scanned the room as her heart skipped a beat, but slowed when her vision confirmed she was alone in the room, morning sunlight splashing through the balcony slider.

Forcing herself to rise, Rosalind sluggishly headed toward the shower, but the welcome heat failed to clear her thoughts. Closing her eyes as she slipped her head under the warm spray, she saw a flash of the bear, his eyes trained on her fragile human form, the creature’s claws high in the air. Eyes flying open, she jerked back from the water, rinsing the soap from her body before stepping out to grab a towel. Staring into the foggy mirror, she wiped at the glass, clearing the vision while shaking her head.

“Am I crazy?” she asked aloud.

Had to have been another dream. But if so, how did I get home?

Wracking her brain, she attempted to recall, but nothing came to mind other than the walk, the bear, and...

“Nymra,” she spoke the fox’s name aloud. Nymra had saved her life, but it couldn’t have been true. The creature who attacked the bear was massive, nothing like the appearance of her slender companion who she had been forced to leave in England. Drawing multiple slow breaths, Rosalind pulled herself from the mirror, grasping a bottle of foundation to assist in covering the circles under her eyes.

Rosalind headed to the closet and flipped through an assortment of tops before settling on a sapphire blouse which would bring out the natural blue of her eyes. Transferring her morning tea into a travel mug, she grabbed her keys and bag from the living room table and walked out the door. She elected to take the main sidewalk instead of the forest trails, still shaken by the strange...vision? Dream?

When she arrived at Robert’s door, slightly out of breath, Zeke was already there. “Heavy foot traffic on the south lawn,” she apologized.

“No problem,” Zeke replied. “I’m grateful to you for taking the time to show me around.”

“My pleasure. Will be good to put my knowledge to the test. I’ve only been here a few months myself, so can’t guarantee I won’t get us lost at least twice, but will do my best.”

“That’s all right. I’ll let you blame me for one of the two.”

Rosalind laughed softly and gestured down the hallway. “Shall we?”

Nodding, Zeke followed Rosalind down the narrow corridor and down a series of steps which eventually led them from the building.
