I shook my head and tried to wipe the smile off my face. âTwo against one isnât fair.â
âIt is when youâre bigger than both of us!â Adleyâs laughter bubbled from her lips, and she smiled wide.
âBesides,â Wendy echoed, âSomeone needs to clean up the mess you made.â She grabbed the ice cream cone off the coffee table and laughed. âThe one who started the nonsense has to clean up.â Wendy held the cone out to me.
âOh really?â I grabbed the cone and shook my head. âI see how this is going to go. You two are going to gang up on me, make a mess, and then make me clean it up.â
âYup!â Adley shouted.
Wendy followed me into the kitchen and grabbed the ice cream from the freezer. âJust add a scoop to the top.â Her tone was light, and I could tell she was fighting off another laughing fit. She grabbed the ice cream scoop from the sink and dug a huge scoop out of the container. âI still canât believe you poured your beer over our ice cream.â
âOurs?â I chuckled.
She glanced up at me. âUh, yeah. Remember, you bribed me to move over with it? Now I gotta make my own bowl.â
I shook my head and walked back into the living room with Adleyâs cone. âHere, girly.â
She grabbed the cone and moved back over to where she had been sitting. âThank you.â
âHeads up,â Wendy called.
A wet cloth sailed through the air and hit me smack dab in the center of my chest.
Adley sputtered with laughter, and Wendy gasped.
âWhoops,â Adley sang.
I grabbed the cloth before it hit the floor and looked at Wendy. âYou are going to pay for that.â
Wendy snickered and ducked back into the kitchen. âConsider it pay back for the nasty beer you dumped in my ice cream,â she called.
I shook my head and wiped up the coffee table. âI canât believe I have to live under these conditions.â
Adley giggled, and I realized that was my new favorite sound.
I grabbed my bowl of melted ice cream and dropped it into the kitchen sink. I rinsed out the washcloth and draped it over the faucet.
âSuch a waste of ice cream,â Wendy tsked. She set the ice cream back in the freezer and shielded her bowl from me. âDonât even think about touching this.â
I leaned against the sink and folded my arms over my chest. âTouching what?â
She grabbed a spoon from the drawer and stabbed it into her ice cream. âMy ice cream.â
âOh,â I chuckled. âDonât worry about that, sugar.â
I was getting a taste for something different than ice cream.
âIs there something else I should worry about you touching?â
I wiggled my eyebrows and shrugged. âGuess youâll just have to wait and see.â
Wendy was only a couple of feet away from me, but I wanted her closer to me. I wanted her right next to me and my hands touching more than her leg.
âDonât forget you hate me, Swifty.â She waved her spoon at me and smiled.
I shook my head. âNah.
