Chapter 25
Lee Wednesday, December 28, 9:22 PM
He expected to see Dianne when he pulled the door open, knocking because she had left her room key sitting on the dresser, so he was surprised to find Agent Cooper standing there instead.
âIsnât this Ms. Williamsâs room?â
Billy strolled up beside Lee and gave Cooper the once-over.
âThis is Cooper, the FBI agent we told you about.â
Cooper stared at them both, confused and irritated.
âThe FBI must be hard up for agents,â Billy said, then walked away.
âCome on in,â Lee said, stepping to the side. âSheâll be back shortly.â
Lee returned to the chair he had been straddling and watched as Cooper studied the other Knights.
âIâm guessing that this is Billy Wister?â the agent commented, looking at Billy on the bed.
Billy gave no sign of acknowledgment.
Then turning his attention to the other man, âAnd this would be Raymond Jackson.â
âThatâs pretty good,â Billy commented from the bed. âCan you guess how much change I have in my pocket?â
When Leeâs mouth opened to speak, Cooper said, âThey all have FBI files like yours.â
âWe have FBI files?â Raymond asked, his eyebrows raised, surprise in his voice.
âI bet mine is thicker than yours,â Billy said.
âObviously, because, like you, itâs full of rocks,â Raymond countered.
âBetter rocks than hot air!â
A sharp ringing from the hotel phone interrupted their bantering.
âDonât answer that,â Cooper barked as Billy reached to pick up the handset.
âWhy?â Billy asked.
Cooper remained silent as the phone continued to ring. Finally, after it stopped, he said, âYour cell phone will ring next. Donât answer that either.â
âThe screenâs broke. I couldnât answer it if I wanted to,â Lee informed the agent.
âWe need to contact Ms. Williams right away, let her know the same.â
Just as Billy pulled his cell phone from his pocket, there was another knock at the door. Lee sprang up and opened it, letting Dianne stroll into the room.
âAgent Cooper,â Dianne said, acknowledging the agentâs presence before glancing at Lee and Raymond. Though she didnât say anything, the look in her eyes appeared apologetic. âDoes this mean my information was right?â
Agent Cooper walked over to the window, pulled back the blinds, then turned and looked back at Dianne. âWe need to leave, now.â
âWhy?â Raymond asked.
âBecause my colleagues will knock on your door soon, and if youâre here, theyâll put you on a plane back to Charlotte. And if you refuse, theyâll throw you in jail.â
Dianne grabbed her fleece jacket from the corner of the bed where sheâd left it. âThen where should we go? We need someplace to talk.â
âWe can go out to the airport. I can get us in a conference room out there,â Billy suggested. He had risen into a sitting position.
âToo dangerous. Weâll be watching the airport,â Cooper dismissed the idea, shaking his head.
âThen where do you suggest we go?â Raymond asked.
Cooper paused for a moment.
âJail.â
