Chapter 25

Lee Wednesday, December 28, 9:22 PM

He expected to see Dianne when he pulled the door open, knocking because she had left her room key sitting on the dresser, so he was surprised to find Agent Cooper standing there instead.

“Isn’t this Ms. Williams’s room?”

Billy strolled up beside Lee and gave Cooper the once-over.

“This is Cooper, the FBI agent we told you about.”

Cooper stared at them both, confused and irritated.

“The FBI must be hard up for agents,” Billy said, then walked away.

“Come on in,” Lee said, stepping to the side. “She’ll be back shortly.”

Lee returned to the chair he had been straddling and watched as Cooper studied the other Knights.

“I’m guessing that this is Billy Wister?” the agent commented, looking at Billy on the bed.

Billy gave no sign of acknowledgment.

Then turning his attention to the other man, “And this would be Raymond Jackson.”

“That’s pretty good,” Billy commented from the bed. “Can you guess how much change I have in my pocket?”

When Lee’s mouth opened to speak, Cooper said, “They all have FBI files like yours.”

“We have FBI files?” Raymond asked, his eyebrows raised, surprise in his voice.

“I bet mine is thicker than yours,” Billy said.

“Obviously, because, like you, it’s full of rocks,” Raymond countered.

“Better rocks than hot air!”

A sharp ringing from the hotel phone interrupted their bantering.

“Don’t answer that,” Cooper barked as Billy reached to pick up the handset.

“Why?” Billy asked.

Cooper remained silent as the phone continued to ring. Finally, after it stopped, he said, “Your cell phone will ring next. Don’t answer that either.”

“The screen’s broke. I couldn’t answer it if I wanted to,” Lee informed the agent.

“We need to contact Ms. Williams right away, let her know the same.”

Just as Billy pulled his cell phone from his pocket, there was another knock at the door. Lee sprang up and opened it, letting Dianne stroll into the room.

“Agent Cooper,” Dianne said, acknowledging the agent’s presence before glancing at Lee and Raymond. Though she didn’t say anything, the look in her eyes appeared apologetic. “Does this mean my information was right?”

Agent Cooper walked over to the window, pulled back the blinds, then turned and looked back at Dianne. “We need to leave, now.”

“Why?” Raymond asked.

“Because my colleagues will knock on your door soon, and if you’re here, they’ll put you on a plane back to Charlotte. And if you refuse, they’ll throw you in jail.”

Dianne grabbed her fleece jacket from the corner of the bed where she’d left it. “Then where should we go? We need someplace to talk.”

“We can go out to the airport. I can get us in a conference room out there,” Billy suggested. He had risen into a sitting position.

“Too dangerous. We’ll be watching the airport,” Cooper dismissed the idea, shaking his head.

“Then where do you suggest we go?” Raymond asked.

Cooper paused for a moment.

“Jail.”
