Once again, James woke up in a sweat. It had been so lucid. The sights, the smells, and the emotion – had he really felt that? Really enjoyed killing that man?

He didn’t want to think about it! As all halfway decent people were taught, killing without justification was wrong. James was no different. Had he really felt that way back then? Pleasure from killing? Enjoyment from evil? He might have thought differently back then, and he sincerely hoped he thought differently now. He now knew that evil could reward just as much as good. Often, even more so.

Even now, he still felt a sense that his life in Galis had been built on a mentality of survival overtaking all. No principles. No morals. Just the kill and the loot. He shook his head to chase away the thoughts. He didn’t want to think about it. He felt disgusted at himself, at the world which forced him to become that. He didn’t know what had changed. Deep down, did he still feel he could justly kill an innocent? He didn’t know. He had killed so many people and creatures and was still killing them. Honestly, he felt nothing. It was all about completing a job. He did not do it for pleasure but neither did he regret the taking of life. It was necessary. In the world, you either hurt or were hurt yourself. James was sick of being hurt. Had refused to be hurt long ago. But that had changed. Maybe it was from becoming a tinman, but he didn’t want to kill for reasons like that anymore.

He looked up to see that the fire was burning out and was down to the dying crimson embers of near extinguishment. Quok and Vick were still sleeping but Ryan was in the process of interrupting their gentle slumber. Without a word, they broke camp and continued their journey through the cavernous underbelly of the Red Sand desert.

The journey was long, tedious, tiring, and devoid of the usual pleasure of surveying one’s surroundings. James asked Marshal where he estimated they were, and he said about a quarter of the way. If they continued at this pace, they would reach Dead Stone in six days. James could hardly bear spending a few more hours in complete darkness when light suddenly blinded him.

First, he thought it was a flash bang. That the Xank had found them. But the flash didn’t stop and, after blinking to become accustomed to the light, he saw the source.

The walls were crafted of smoothed granite and the floor was carpeted with even, black tiles. The roof stretched up higher than any of the other central rooms and James wouldn’t have been surprised if it ended on top of a mountain. The light emanated from a vehicle located in the centre of the landing pad. It appeared to be a gunship. But not like any kind of gunship he’d ever seen. James was sure he had never seen any of the Troopers use one, at least.
