The Arbiter of the Colonial Congress was a capable, cool-headed, slightly spooky man, and am exceedingly fast learner. But he wasnât a pilot, and it showed.
âOne button,â he droned in his silky voice, which Nadie now found annoying. She would prefer if he cussed, or joked, or even complained. Instead, he made concise, flat remarks she could barely latch on to while her mind focused on the stick and a set of cranky and misaligned instruments in a setting that was better for two people.
âYes, sir. Keep on pressing it. See that red line? If it falls below the groove, we will lose the stabilisers and drop down to the surface spinning and flailing like a tatty rag doll.â
âThatâs bad.â
âYes.â
âWhy.â
âYou donât wanna hit the ground with the roof, or with a wing.â
âThe Anvil has wings?â Pace actually used a question mark to finish a question.
âRudimentary, yes. Theyâre supposed to help with surface landing.â
âLetâs hope they help us now.â
Nadieâs eyebrows shot up at the slight uplift in the Arbiterâs tone. Did Jacob Pace make a joke? She scanned the Arbiterâs face for any sign of change, but it was still as hard as a stone. She must have imagined it.
The Anvil started shaking again. âWeâre going into the atmosphere. Letâs keep it quiet now, sir.â
Pace said nothing. Nadie knotted her brows, piloting as best she could. The green force still held the ship. It was benevolent, but air resistance was at work too. The outer hull heated up. Structural integrity held.
She could do nothing but try and keep the Anvil on a safe course through the layers of atmospheric gasses. They were not as abundant as in the nebula, and she had the full view of the planet below.
The surface of Libertalia was clearly divided into a series of belts, each one a different cast. The central one was like sand, and the one above it had a deep brown hue. Two separate stripes were sage green, and another one was yellow. At the poles, the ice caps werenât white, but light-blue.
Nadie saw mountain ridges and the outlines of the seas. She thought the darker spots were forests. There were no clouds to obscure her view of the planet.
The tremors were nothing major. They didnât reach the intensity within the Origo. The green force adjusted to act as a cushion, helping Nadie make a steady descent. She managed to position the Anvil above a flat plain between two mountain ranges. At about 15 kilometres above the ground, she spied movement below â something that looked like a herd of big animals running parallel to the Anvilâs course. Nadie observed them with curiosity, hoping against the odds that they might be horses, or something similar, at least. She had hoped to learn to ride on horseback since she was a kid.
âWeâre nearly there, sir.â
âI will remain quiet.â Pace kept on pressing the button. She didnât bother telling him that it was probably unnecessary at this point.
I hope youâre close to restoring power, Isa.
