Goodness. Her hand hovered above a page, from where Callum stared up at her.
It was Sunday, and Lana flicked through pages of the magazine she was reading in the Cherry Pie Café. The magazines were old and dog-eared, and rather than being a source of information, they were more like historical documents.
This was an article about the premiere of Town and Country from three years earlier. There were photos from a red carpet screening with celebrities and the cast in attendance.
The network had wanted to âgo bigâ with the premiere. Old school glamour and press to revive a soapie formula that hadnât been as popular in recent times thanks to streaming services and reality television.
Callum had been nervous, but it didnât show in the photos. Other cast members were featured too, including Dr Richard Everton - the doctor from Town and Country. Adored by Annette, despised by the teenagers whoâd swooned over Callum.
Sheâd never worked with him much other than some general promotion as part of the show and never really had any great opinion of him. He was a solid actor and conventionally handsome in a square-jawed, clear-eyed sort of way, but he lacked a particular star quality. A certain charisma that took clients from being reliable casting material to superstars.
He shared an agent with one of her former clients. She drummed her fingernails on the counter. Maybe she should put in a call to do some fishing to see what he thought about Callum.
Was he jealous of his younger star? She turned the page. That was ridiculous. What good would it be to send the man death threats? If it ever came out, they would probably fire him and it would be all over the industry. Who would want to hire him after that?
Corrie approached with a piece of apple pie and a cup of coffee, steam rising from the top of the mug.
âDo you watch Town and Country, Corrie?â Lana asked.
The café owner hesitated as she set down the plates. âErr.â
âBe honest.â Lana shot her a warning look. âYou donât need to be embarrassed. Half of Australia watches it and millions in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada. Itâs a big hit in Ireland, apparently.â
Corrie groaned. âItâs so good! I didnât like to admit it.â She blushed. âI love the drama; secret babies, betrayal, even characters coming back from the dead. I know itâs silly, but itâs fun.â
âDonât be ashamed. It is silly but sometimes we need a bit of silliness in our lives. Believe me, I got a very sweet bonus when the publicity campaign far exceeded our expectations. What do you think of him?â She pointed to Dr Everton.
âTheyâre writing him out.â Corrieâs tone was matter-of-fact. âSeems a bit of a shame, to be honest.â
Lana scrunched up her face. âNo! Heâs a big part of the show. He has heaps of good storylines at the hospital.â
âThatâs what it said on the fan forum. Since Callumâs character has become a doctor, maybe the producers felt it was better for Callum to be the only doctor on the show.
