LOU

I pursed my lips to keep them from falling open as I watched Jace hug a tall, broad Black man and call him Dad. I thought Jace was Caucasian, not mixed. It didn’t matter, of course, but I never even considered it a possibility. I watched as Jace hugged his mother who was Caucasian. She looked my way and walked over to me.

“You must be Lou,” she said. “I’m Delilah, Jace’s mother, and that fine gentleman he’s talking to is my husband and Jace’s father, Bryan. Jace isn’t adopted. He’s our biological child.”

I guess I wasn’t hiding my shock well. Jace did look a lot like his mother. He’d gotten his olive skin, crystal-blue eyes, soft, deep brown hair from her. But his face was the same structure as his father’s, except for his nose, and he’d gotten his height from his father too. I hadn’t known, and I guess we’d both forgotten to tell the other something.

“Don’t feel bad for not knowing,” Delilah assured. “He doesn’t feel the need to clarify his race. He’s part of both and is proud to be.”

“I guess that makes sense. I don’t tell people I’m mixed either,” I confided in a low voice. “My bio dad is white.”

“That means you understand better than anyone he’s dated before. Come and meet Bryan.”

A woman walked in with a baby boy on her hip. Delilah introduced her as her middle child, Brenna. Her skin was a creamy light brown and she had mahogany brown eyes and curly hair. It was clear she’d taken more after their father. She hugged me, and the baby claimed a spot on my hip.

“Well, it looks like my brother was right to crush on you for so long.” Brenna beamed and added, “Logan is a picky baby and doesn’t let just anyone hold him. He certainly doesn’t try to jump out of my arms for a stranger. I like her a lot better than that bitch, Dahlia.”

“Seriously, Bren?” Jace groused.

“What did I do wrong now, little brother?”

“Sometimes I wish I were the older sibling,” he grumbled like the little brother he was.

It was fun seeing him around his family. It brought out another side to him that was cute and endearing.

“As if Bren would be any different if she were the younger or older child,” Bryan stated.

“That’s true,” Delilah added.

“Here you go, hon,” Brenna stated, handing me a bottle. “He likes quiet spaces to eat in peace. He takes after my wife.”

I grinned, glancing at Jace who only shrugged his shoulders. He led me out of the kitchen to the den, which was dark, quiet, and cool. It seemed like his parents and sister had welcomed me with open arms. I felt a little bad about the fact that we were deceiving them. Jace and I weren’t together. This wasn’t supposed to be so hard. We were only supposed to be lying to my family, but now we were lying to his too. Maybe I shouldn’t have come here with Jace. I could’ve made up an excuse to go back to Rosa Oaks with my family.
