If I have understood you correctly: because in our whole nature we are related to a “You” above all time and space, that cannot change when our time is at its end. The relationship endures. It has eternal existence. It can probably not be proven that what we have experienced physically survives even after death, but I have an argument for it: when the immortal Divine is present to us even now, in our experience of every chestnut blossom, every eyelash of a beloved person, even the smallest sigh, how can that experience suddenly vanish in death?

So I rejoice to think of meeting my mother again, my grandmother, and my friends who have died. But I also want to see people I could never meet in person. Joseph von Eichendorff,41 for example—I would really love to get to know him. I want to ski with Eichendorff, because he never skied in his lifetime. He would certainly enjoy it. I can easily imagine it—and do I not have the right to imagine? “What might have been and what has been,” says T. S. Eliot, “point to one end, which is always present.”42
