Chapter 12

At three o’clock on the dot, I was at the Lennox residence, ready to take care of Montana’s twins for a few hours.

This was going to be fine. I mean sure, I had no experience taking care of children, but I had been one myself at some point, and that counted as experience, right? They were like, six years old. I had this in the bag. It would just be for a few hours, and this way, Montana and Jeff wouldn’t have to worry about anything.

How hard could it be?

Montana and Jeff lived in a cute little craftsman-style cottage. Painted olive green with white trim, the yard was littered with toys, as was the balcony at the front. A couple Adirondack chairs near the front door were obviously where Montana and Jeff sat while they watched the girls play, and as I reached the front door, I could already hear squeals of high-pitched laughter coming from inside.

I knocked on the door, and the laughter stopped. About fifteen seconds later, the door opened, and Montana greeted me.

“Thank you so much for coming. You have no idea how much this means to me and Jeff.”

“Of course,” I said, smiling. “No problem.”

“Girls, come here,” Montana ordered. A couple seconds later, two heads poked out from around the corner. Annie and Meg were identical twins, although luckily one of them had shorter hair than the other. Each of them had a mop of dark-brown curls, although while Meg’s reached down past her shoulders, Annie’s were cut off right around her chin. Their big, dark eyes that looked exactly like their mother’s peered curiously in my direction, and it didn’t take long for Annie to rush out, her curls bouncing around her head. Dressed in a cute pair of dark-red pants and a flower-print shirt, she held out a hand.

“Hello. It’s nice to see you again. I’m Annie.”

“It’s nice to see you too,” I said with a smile, shaking her little hand. I was cautiously optimistic, given as Annie was the one I liked to call the evil twin, that things were going to go well between us.

Her sister’s confidence led to Meg emerging as well, dressed in a blue version of the same outfit as Annie. “Hi,” she said shyly.

“And you must be Meg,” I said, squatting down onto my heels to greet her. The girl nodded in reply.

“Okay, well, I have to get going,” Montana said. “I’ve left dinner in the fridge, so they can eat whenever they’re hungry, and there’s snacks in the cupboard. Help yourself to anything you’d like. The girls have a bunch of books they can read, and they’re allowed half an hour of TV after dinner. If you need any help, feel free to call me.”

“Thanks. I think we’ll be fine.”

“Great. All right, girls, I’ll be back in a few hours. Be nice to Storm. She’s allowed to punish you, and she’s a weather witch, so she’ll make it rain on your birthday if she doesn’t like you.
