Chapter 12
At three oâclock on the dot, I was at the Lennox residence, ready to take care of Montanaâs twins for a few hours.
This was going to be fine. I mean sure, I had no experience taking care of children, but I had been one myself at some point, and that counted as experience, right? They were like, six years old. I had this in the bag. It would just be for a few hours, and this way, Montana and Jeff wouldnât have to worry about anything.
How hard could it be?
Montana and Jeff lived in a cute little craftsman-style cottage. Painted olive green with white trim, the yard was littered with toys, as was the balcony at the front. A couple Adirondack chairs near the front door were obviously where Montana and Jeff sat while they watched the girls play, and as I reached the front door, I could already hear squeals of high-pitched laughter coming from inside.
I knocked on the door, and the laughter stopped. About fifteen seconds later, the door opened, and Montana greeted me.
âThank you so much for coming. You have no idea how much this means to me and Jeff.â
âOf course,â I said, smiling. âNo problem.â
âGirls, come here,â Montana ordered. A couple seconds later, two heads poked out from around the corner. Annie and Meg were identical twins, although luckily one of them had shorter hair than the other. Each of them had a mop of dark-brown curls, although while Megâs reached down past her shoulders, Annieâs were cut off right around her chin. Their big, dark eyes that looked exactly like their motherâs peered curiously in my direction, and it didnât take long for Annie to rush out, her curls bouncing around her head. Dressed in a cute pair of dark-red pants and a flower-print shirt, she held out a hand.
âHello. Itâs nice to see you again. Iâm Annie.â
âItâs nice to see you too,â I said with a smile, shaking her little hand. I was cautiously optimistic, given as Annie was the one I liked to call the evil twin, that things were going to go well between us.
Her sisterâs confidence led to Meg emerging as well, dressed in a blue version of the same outfit as Annie. âHi,â she said shyly.
âAnd you must be Meg,â I said, squatting down onto my heels to greet her. The girl nodded in reply.
âOkay, well, I have to get going,â Montana said. âIâve left dinner in the fridge, so they can eat whenever theyâre hungry, and thereâs snacks in the cupboard. Help yourself to anything youâd like. The girls have a bunch of books they can read, and theyâre allowed half an hour of TV after dinner. If you need any help, feel free to call me.â
âThanks. I think weâll be fine.â
âGreat. All right, girls, Iâll be back in a few hours. Be nice to Storm. Sheâs allowed to punish you, and sheâs a weather witch, so sheâll make it rain on your birthday if she doesnât like you.
