These cleavages allow for the attenuation and modulation of the pain inherent in the relation to the primary object through the distancing of the intolerable aspects of the "primal internal object"— whether it be excessive excitement or excessive rejection. This process is also made easier by the creation of dynamic connections between the "peripheral selves" and between the "peripheral objects", enabling a modulation of the "excessive" characteristics.

All these partial cleavages and neo-connections make the system more flexible and capable of giving enriched answers, both in the encounter of the "central self" with external reality, where the "maternal and paternal objects " are progressively differentiated, and in its encounter with internal reality proper, which keeps on growing in complex networks.
