Chapter Twelve

Evander pulled us across the slick floors, and we pressed against the wall to open the front door a sliver. He peered out, eyes scanning the quiet, dark street beyond. “I don’t see any white robes,” he murmured, almost as if to himself. “But they will spot us easily at this rate. They’re bound to be close.”

I looked down at our wrists again. The back of my hand rested against his. I couldn’t even turn my hand within the bounds of the rope, which still glowed with warmth. If only we could use the shrinking powder he had used on my clothing to make our hands smaller in some way. I knew that probably wouldn’t work, but maybe there was another way to change the shape of our hands.

“Evander… you can turn into a cat, can’t you?”

He looked away from the door, regarding me with surprise. “Well, that’s an idea. Perhaps the rope cannot bind to a paw.”

I gave a nod.

He closed the heavy door softly, and then with our backs still to the wall, he reached down to his belt where a small, brown leather pouch held a glass vial. He brought it to his lips, unstoppered it with his teeth, and spit out the cork. He raised it in a silent, mock salute to me, and then swallowed the blue liquid in one gulp. He shuddered, and his body took on a translucent effect. Before him, the image of a cat shimmered into view, and back and forth, his original form faded and solidified in tandem with the image of the cat, until suddenly, he was gone, and a black cat stood at my feet.

With an angry yowl, the cat flew through the air, yanked into my arms. His paw was tied to my right wrist with a golden thread.

I sighed, looking at our twined state. “Well. It was worth a try.”

Evander, his eyes now yellow, looked up at me, blinking in his cat-like way. His voice, now clear as his own in my mind, said, “Still, it might help our escape. Alya will be looking for two people.”

“Can you become human again?” I asked.

“I was never human,” he teased, winking. “But yes. It takes me a moment, but I can return to your Faie captive at any time.”

“Ah,” I smiled, scratching his ears with my injured hand, “Now you are my captive. I think I like that turn of events.”

“Do you mind carrying me, my captor?”

“No,” I cuddled him closer, drawing him against me and into my cloak.

He started to purr. “Sorry. That’s warm. I can’t help the purring thing.”

I snorted, and then shifting him to my right hand, which was bound to him anyway, turned to open the door a crack. I looked out, unsure of what to search for, but saw no one in the streets. I slipped out, closing the door behind us, and asked, “Now where?”

“Well, I had thought to try another part of the prophecy,” he said as I made my way cautiously through the streets.
