CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I knew it. I knew he was here.

Coldness spread through me. I stumbled forwards, my hands numbing. The temperature had dropped at least ten degrees. It wouldn’t take much more for Vance and me to freeze to death. We were still human, magic or none.

Fionn appeared, sitting astride his dark-pelted horse. So he was playing Huntsman, not shapeshifter. That magic, though… I hadn’t seen it from him before. He’d frozen this entire area of the Grey Vale. He has someone from Winter on his side. Someone powerful.

Fionn waved a hand and warmth circled me, like a fire had been lit nearby. Vance stepped forward, his claws sliding out. “What’s your game?” he demanded.

“This is no game,” said Fionn. “I made the mistake of not taking you humans seriously before… or your endless capacity to run yourselves into fatal errors. As amusing as it would be to watch you struggle, I can’t afford to bet against you any longer. You’ve done too much damage already.”

“If you mean killing your pet Sidhe, you shouldn’t have handed the life-drinker to a twelve-year-old with a god complex.” I glanced at the dragon shifter. No human could lose that much blood and survive for long. I didn’t know the rules on gods, or if they were any different to the Sidhe, but maybe even a healing spell wouldn’t work.

“The life-drinker was expendable,” Fionn said dismissively. “I had to find some way to divert your attention.”

I knew it. If Fionn hadn’t been at the castle, he’d have good reason. Not that it helped to know I’d been right. What army had he gathered this time? He already had all the exiles, a bunch of reborn Sidhe, and god-knew-how-many ghosts at his beck and call. And his Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Sure, he’d lost his hellhounds, but I hadn’t the faintest idea where they’d scattered to after I’d broken the cauldron.

“This is very enlightening,” growled Vance. “But if you mean to attack our realm again, you won’t find it undefended.”

“What makes you think I would waste any more time on you?” Fionn’s head tilted on one side. “You brought your mage along for the ride, even though you know this realm is a poison to him. Mortals never cease to confuse me, but you’re far too late. Your realm will fall, but as a side effect. Whether you defend it or not, the outcome will be the same.”

“Side effect?” I said.

“The realms are all intertwined. What happens to one affects the others.”

“You do realise if you screw up all the realms, you’ll die, don’t you?” I inched closer to Vance, trying to keep Fionn’s attention on my face. I was under no illusions that either of us would be able to harm Fionn as he was now, but our only ally on the same power level as Fionn was bleeding out on the ground.

“Don’t worry about me.” Fionn’s mouth curled in a smile. “The faerie realms are more resilient than yours is. More so than their inhabitants.
