CHAPTER TWELVE
“Of course she is,” I growled. “That’s it. Take another shot, universe. I’m done.”
“Whoa.” The mage backed away. “Sorry. I can’t think how she slipped out. Unless she climbed over the fence and went through the field.”
“Shit. Yeah, she probably did.”
I ran the rest of the way to the conservatory and through the glass door onto the patio. Grey clouds gathered above the lawns, promising rain. No traces remained of Roseanne. I swore and marched through the garden towards the field at the end. After I’d searched under every bush and behind every carved hedge, Vance reappeared at my side when I returned to the conservatory.
“Any luck?” I kicked mud off my shoes, furious with myself. I should at least have attempted another apology for insulting her, but the banshee’s coup had driven everything else from my head.
“No,” said Vance. “She isn’t around the front of the manor, either. She’s obviously run somewhere else.”
“Then we’ll use a tracking spell. She isn’t immune to them.”
We went through to the living room. Wanda wasn’t here—Vance said she was resting in her own room upstairs—and it was easy to see where Roseanne had been sitting. Faeries shed more than humans did, and a glossy black hair which glowed faintly with faerie magic was enough. Tossing it onto the table, I grabbed a tracking spell from my pocket. Time to track down our little runaway.
I blinked, and as the spell activated, I saw through her eyes. Roseanne ran through the field behind the manor. Wait—her feet weren’t touching the ground. Damn. She’d shapeshifted into her bird form. Roseanne flew over the fence into the grounds belonging to the neighbouring house, then the next. Once she’d reached the end of the road, she slipped down the nearest alley and onto the street. She flew faster than I’d ever seen her walk, her feet skimming the pavement, until she reached the entry to the block of flats where she’d lived. Thought so.
The winged half-faerie I’d seen last time came to meet her, wearing an agitated expression. She spoke, frantic gestures accompanying her words. Roseanne kicked at the fence with a clawed foot. The hands in front of me exploded into taloned claws as she took off into the air. She flew higher, aiming for a familiar sight—
“Half-blood territory?” I cursed, letting the spell fade out. “Why? Why does everyone insist on going out of their way to be as big a nuisance as possible?”
Since she could fly, Roseanne would be on half-blood territory in seconds. And thanks to the lack of sound, I didn’t have a clue what had upset her and her friend so much.
I explained to Vance what I’d seen. “If the banshee catches us, she won’t go easy on us this time. Maybe we can talk to the guards and get our little problem back without resorting to violence.” Which seemed about as likely as a friendly chat with a troll, but at this point, I’d take any chance possible to stop the banshee from causing any more damage.
