A hand slides between my thighs. “Baby, look at me.”

Sappy brown eyes, streaked blond hair, and a rich boy smile I’d ordinarily avoid like last year’s prints. He lowers his mouth to my ear. “How about we move this party to my place?”

What?

Where am I?

I scan the bar, the music so loud I can barely hear myself think. This isn’t one of my usual haunts, but it’s familiar.

A sense of déjà vu washes over me.

“Victoria.” A short, middle-aged chubby woman in black pants and a white shirt squeezes between three sweaty bodies, rocking in time to the pounding bass. Her normally warm features are twisted with worry. “Thank god I’ve found you.”

Marta?

This can’t be happening.

“What’re you doing here?” I sputter.

“Honey, I’ve been sick with worry.”

“Whoa.” The arm around my waist loosens, and his hand falls from beneath my skirt. “Is this your mom? Oh man, are you underage?”

Marta’s more than a mom. She’s my housekeeper. My friend. The only person in this world who gives two shits about me.

“No, stupid.” I shove him. “I’m not underage.” I press a hand to my temple. Something feels off. The bar. Marta . . . “Did you spike my drink?”

“Oh sweet, Jesus. How much have you had?” Marta cups my face, angling my head so she can look me in the eye. She’s the only person in my inner circle shorter than me. “Victoria, why do you do this to yourself?”

She’s also the only person in my family who doesn’t call me Rhee.

I like that.

I swat her hands from my face. “Leave me alone. Go home to your kids and husband. I’m fine.” I sidle up to the loser beside me, but he’s gone.

Where’d he go?

“Jerry,” Marta calls over her shoulder. “Get the car.”

I hadn’t noticed the bulky body guard behind her. He arches a brow that pretty much echoes Marta’s spiel.

And that’s when I know.

“They didn’t send you, did they? You came on your own.” Trying to focus on the edge of the duct-taped bar, I laugh. I already know the answer, but pathetic as I am, I keep hoping for a different response.

“Honey, your parents are . . . Of course, they’re concerned. They care. They’re busy people with a lot on their minds without the added pressure of this scandal.”

Oh, the scandal.

Is that what we’re calling it now?

“Why do you fucking defend them?”

“Victoria, language!” The sharpness of her tone shuts down the next cycle of fucks and damns I was about to spew.

“Sorry.” It’s not her fault my parents put her in this predicament. It’s mine. “I really am,” I say, slurring the words.

“I know, sweetie.”

My alcohol fueled rage turns to a pitiful sob. “They kicked me out of Yale.”

“Let’s get you home.” She shoves a shoulder under mine, moving my body with a strength that always amazes me. “This is a bump in the road. You’re meant for greater things, honey. Have faith.”

I snort. “Faith is for losers.”

“You think I’m a loser?” Marta guides us to the door.

“Not you. You’re an angel.
