Chapter 11

That night, I lay awake in my bed and watched as the moon cast shadows across my ceiling. Sleep evaded me and I knew it was no use to even try and close my eyes. Another dream had come to me and this one had been just as elusive and confusing as the last one had been. A female voice called to me, pulling me in my sleep through a long, black tunnel just outside of the academy grounds. Thinking about it brought a shiver down my spine.

“Brie, follow the magic,” the voice had sang loudly.

“Please, just show yourself,” I cried out.

Exasperated, I rushed toward the tunnel, but with every step I took, I seemed to only stay further away from the massive space. Was it moving away from me? I wasn’t sure. All I knew was that I wanted to stop this madness and find the answers that evaded me.

“Woodsong Academy will reveal the truth. Be patient and allow it to guide you,” the voice said one last time, and then the world around me grew still.

No longer was the tunnel in my view, but instead, a vast expanse of blackness surrounded me. I couldn’t even see my hands that I waved in front of my own face. The way the voice personified the school, made it seem as though it was a real living. Frustrated, I tried to run again, but this time my feet were heavy like they were stuck in quicksand and I was trapped. Fear reigned and just as I went to cry out for help, I awoke in a state of panic.

Breathing heavily, I looked around my room and found myself thankful to be in a familiar place.

And safe.

I sat up and put on a robe that had been hanging in my closet. I tied it around my waist and ventured out of my room and the commons area. There was no way that I could sleep now.

I needed some fresh air and realized that I could sit on the balcony just outside our common area. I walked slowly to the door, not wanting to make any sound and wake the others. Placing my hand on the doorknob, I carefully opened the door and felt a gust of cool air greeted me. I inhaled the familiar scent of night air and smiled. This is exactly what I needed.

I stepped out onto the balcony and almost screamed as I realized I wasn’t alone. Standing in the far corner was a shadow of a person, hunched over and looking out into the night.

“Don’t scream, it’s just me,” a familiar voice hushed me.

My heart began to settle as I realized it was just Ace. Wait, Ace. Why was he here now?

“What are you doing out here?” I asked, my voice shaking.

“I should ask you the same thing,” he responded.

I rolled my eyes. Why does he always have to be so difficult?

“I asked you first,” I argued, realizing we both sounded like two annoying little kids.

Sighing, Ace
