23.

Blue walked through the condo’s front door a step behind Brady. After three nights on the yacht, they were back to real life. He hoped the cruise marked a point where they spent more time enjoying J.P. and Dina’s company and less discussing things they were helpless to stop.

“Feel free to leave the landline turned off,” Brady said.

“Fine with me. That’s only fun for about a day.”

With the door barely closed, Blue’s cell burst into song in his pocket, playing Scoob’s ringtone. He smiled, fishing it from his jeans.

“Did you hire a psychic to tell you when I’d be home or just set up surveillance?” he asked.

A torrent of words wiped away his smile, rushing out of the phone in a voice well into panic.

“Hold on, Scoob. I can’t understand what you’re saying. Take a breath.” He listened to the ragged, stuttered breathing on the other end. “What happened?”

“Cal wrecked his car,” Scoob said, tears in his voice. “I don’t even know if he’s alive. I can’t do this again. I can’t,” Scoob croaked, his breathing fast and harsh.

The words wadded up Blue’s heart and tossed it into his stomach.

“Take it easy.” He struggled to keep his pulse from rising along with Scoob’s. “Where are you?” He gripped the back of a dining room chair for support.

“Emergency.”

“Which hospital? Where can I find you?” He paced a circle between the table and the kitchen’s breakfast counter.

Scoob told him where Calvin was, and a simple plan floated through the spikes of adrenaline.

“I’m heading out the door now. I’ll be there as soon as I can. Keep your cell on, okay?”

“Yeah.” Scoob didn’t sound reassured.

“This isn’t the same thing. It’s a different situation. Hold on to that, all right?”

“It feels the same.”

“It isn’t. Different vehicle. Different weather. Different city.”

Scoob brushed his logic aside. “Just hurry, eh? I want to get out of here.”

“I will.”

He ended the call and stood with his hands pressed into the breakfast bar’s cool marble. His simple plan would also take half the afternoon.

He had to drop by Scoob’s house and grab the only thing able to calm him. He also had to get to Scoob before his traumatized friend lost the ability to remain rational. The tasks took him in opposite directions. With traffic, it could be well over an hour before he reached the hospital. That was a long time to leave a guy alone in the middle of a meltdown.

“Fuck.” He smacked his palm against the counter. “Fuck!” He smacked it harder.

“What happened?” Brady asked.

He opened his mouth to explain, and the answer to his dilemma popped out instead.

“I need to call Mel.”

He hit two buttons and let speed dial handle the rest. Mel picked up on the second ring. He told her about Scoob and sent her to sit with him until they could do better than hold his hand.

“I need to pick up Cheeser,” he said to Brady who’d heard every detail.

“I’ll drive.” Brady dumped their garment bag on the kitchen table and strode back to the door.
