Douglass posed for a photo with his grandson Joseph, who became a famed concert violinist.

Before the end of slavery, Douglass presents himself in direct, aggressive poses. His fists are sometimes clenched. Or he folds his arms across his chest. He stares directly at the camera. At this time in his life, he advocated violent resistance to slaveholding. After slavery ended, Douglass’ poses soften. He sometimes gazes to the side of the lens. He is growing older. He has achieved his goal.

Douglass looks directly at the camera or to the side. Occasionally he is shot in profile. Always he models an amazing variety of styles — long hair, usually; a goatee; a chin beard; a mustache; muttonchop side whiskers; clean-shaven; a full beard. He even has a short ponytail at one point. At the time, elaborate, sometimes eccentric hairstyles were popular among intellectuals. It was as if the wearer’s body could not contain his thoughts — they were sprouting out of him, even through his hair.
