âSion?â
I knelt beside her and shook her shoulder. She was unresponsive. Fear constricted my throat and I looked around. A few people had stopped to stare. I wanted to ask for help, but what could these people do to help a dragon?
Sion?
Still nothing. Her mind was blank like an empty dark cave. I lifted her into my arms and turned back the way weâd come. Sheâd been fine outside the city. It must be that smell she kept talking about. Or perhaps it was the magic from the mysterious figure. Panic was starting to take over. I stumbled and almost dropped Sion. My arm muscles were burning from the exertion and I stopped to adjust her position over my shoulder.
I received a few odd stares, but I ignored them and continued carrying her out of the city. I took her back to the stable and set her down in the stall. Maren was waiting for me, but I couldnât leave Sion. I ran my fingers along the side of her face, tucking a few stray red hairs behind her ear.
It felt like an eternity before I felt her presence through the bond again, but it had probably only been a few minutes.
âSion,â I whispered. âAre you hurt?â
No. She lifted her head weakly and looked around. Where are we?
âWeâre back in the stable. You passed out on the street.â I sent a swirl of partial images through the bond.
I donât know what happened. My legs grew tired and my body was hot, and then everything went dark.
âWas it the smell? Did it overpower your senses?â
It wasnât the scent. It was merely a moment of weakness. I feel fine now. Letâs go.
âNo,â I said, shaking my head. âI think something in the city caused it. You need to stay here.â
Sion attempted to sit up, but her human body didnât cooperate. She fell back down.
Donât look at me like that.
âLike what?â
Like Iâm dying. Iâm not.
âI know that. Iâm just worried about you.â
Donât be. Go.
âI canât leave you right now.â
Sion closed her eyes and growled. It sounded much less intimidating from a human body.
Iâm fine. Go find the girl.
âIf anything happens to you â¦â
GO!
Her command was so strong through the bond that I fell backward as if she had physically shoved me. I rose to my feet and reached down for the collar, but Sion feebly slapped at my hand. I left it on her and hurried out of the stall. It tore at my heart to leave her so vulnerable, but she swore she was fine. I knew without any doubt it had something to do with the person taking children. I was going to find them, no matter what it took.
I pushed through the crowds of people packing the streets and swiftly returned to where Iâd left Maren. She wasnât in the alley. I figured sheâd probably got tired of waiting on me, so I stepped back onto the street and looked around. The old woman with the cart of fake charms was back, but I didnât see Maren.
