In fact, even though people know better when it comes to the way the world really is, people tend to experience maps as though the oceans extend quite literally behind the continents. That’s another way of thinking about the fact that the oceans aren’t assigned a shape—a boundary or contour—which would turn them into recognizable percepts. People tend to perceive only one side of a contour as a thinglike figure. The other side is relegated to background, to the space from which the thinglike figure is seen to emerge.
