Adria was pleasantly tipsy as she made her way back to State Quarters, aware that it had been reckless to drink so much, but drunk enough to think it was funny.

Adria opted to bypass the stairs, stalking around the building and ducking down to avoid each set of windows. Gelvid’s rooms were on the first floor, which posed a bit of a challenge. She didn’t have a huge amount of experience with breaking and entering but her eleven-year-old self would have relished the idea of climbing one of the trees outside his window. She looked down at her scraped and heavily abused palms and tried to muster up some of her old enthusiasm. It might take all her luck just to avoid breaking her neck.

There was something exhilarating about the physical challenge of climbing the tree. It was easier than worrying about what she should do next or who would suspect her. It was something tangible and physical that she had to do, and the only thing standing in her way was the stinging of her palms against the rough bark and the protestations of her aching muscles as she strained to pull herself higher.

She balanced precariously on the thickest branch she could find, with her knees bent and one arm wrapped tight around the trunk of the tree. Gelvid’s office was pitch black and, thankfully, empty. She just had to get his window open and climb inside. Reaching it though, that was the first challenge.

The wood beneath her feet felt sturdy enough. Adria tried not to imagine the sudden snap of a breaking branch as she inched closer to the window, one arm reached out in front of her to grasp onto the ledge should the worst happen. Just a little further and she could brush her fingertips against the window. Slowly though, the branch was lowering, drooping with her weight, and Adria began to fall forward. She couldn’t help the shout as her stomach dropped but she threw out her hands grasping for anything she could, and her fingers found the window ledge as her legs scrabbled for purchase against the stone wall.

Her heart pounded in her chest. She probably wouldn’t die from a fall at this height – she’d just break a fair few bones, ones she’d rather stayed intact.

Her foot caught a ledge above the windows of the floor below and she pushed herself up, relieving the pressure on her fingers and freeing up one hand to pry the window open. With another shove she pushed it up and threw herself gracelessly inside, landing face-first in a heap onto the floor, shaking but bizarrely energised from her brush with danger.

She took a moment to adjust to the darkness of the room and spotted a candle on Gelvid’s desk that would do nicely. She needed enough light to search the room, but not so much that she might draw anyone’s attention. Her perilous climb had sobered her up, or maybe it was just the seriousness of what she was doing.
