MILES AWAY IN NEW YORK, Emily glanced at the charge on the phone. How much power was left in the watch? She’d forgotten to ask. She’d dropped the brightness and turned off any apps running in the background, and set the iPhone to low power mode. Under the cover of night, her face illuminated by the phone, she stared at iMessage waiting for a text from Anna. She’d checked the car to see if there was a charger, but there wasn’t. She wouldn’t wait until it was too low before she found one.

A prevailing thought pushed through that if she wasn’t so busted up, she could have given chase.

But realistically, how far would she have gotten alone?

The faces of the man and woman flashed in her mind.

She wracked her brain, wondering if she’d seen them before. She wanted to contact Travis and get an update, but there was nothing he could tell her. He was trying to get there as fast as he could. She was scared. Alone. And in doubt about the outcome. These things rarely worked out. Twenty-four hours was being generous in an abduction case. More times than not a kid only stayed alive a few hours. Except Anna wasn’t just any kid. She was strong, resilient, smart but also suffering from diabetes and that put the odds of her survival even lower.

If she died or was murdered, Emily wasn’t sure what she would do. Her kids were her life. The very reason she had walked out on a bad marriage after fourteen years.

Had her abductor known them?

Kyle had warned her to be vigilant, to be on the lookout for anything out of place. I will make enemies. It comes with this line of work. He wasn’t paranoid about it but he often reminded her. If you see anything unusual let me know. When they would go to a restaurant he would never sit with his back to the exit. Kyle always had to be at the rear of the restaurant, closer to the back doors, where he had a good view of everyone. To others, it must have seemed weird, especially friends when they went out for a meal, but she’d just gotten used to it.

That was back when things were good.

How had everything gone so wrong? It wasn’t like she hadn’t fought for her marriage. Kyle wasn’t a bad person but he’d changed over the years. Become withdrawn. She thought it was his work. Coming home, reaching for a beer the moment he walked in the door, slumping in a chair, and expecting his meal to be just right or he would start an argument. He never seemed to have enough gas in his tank to talk and when she tried, she just got her head bitten off.

If it was just that alone, she might have let it slide, notched it up to a bad season, a bad year even, but it just gradually got worse to where his drinking was affecting the kids. He’d snap at them and refuse to spend time with the family.
