TWENTY-THREE
We made our way to my room in silence. The only sounds were our shoes hitting the polished linoleum floors and our hearts pounding in the cages of our chests. There was no need for Matthew to hold me at gunpoint or demand that my hands be interlocked on top of my head. He was trained to notice the slightest hint of unnecessary muscle movement. My Element was stronger than his, but he had years of experience and training on me. If I even so much as thought about trying to fight him or light him on fire, heâd have me on the ground with my hands behind my back in complete submission.
And I really wanted to light him on fire.
He punched the code into the keypad that held the steel door to my room shut and its locks sighed as they moved from their tight spots. Jess gasped when she saw me and ran to my side. She had a new bruise under her right eye, but she didnât look too badly beat up.
âWhat happened? Are you okay?â she asked, concerned.
I smiled at her. âIâm fine, promise.â
âThereâs so much blood though,â she exclaimed before suddenly wincing and clutching her side.
âItâs not mine. Are you okay?â I raised an eyebrow in suspicion.
She shook her head. âI got kicked pretty hard. David packs a hit.â
âThey pinned you against Bohart?â This time Matthew spoke and it made us jump. âThat kid is huge! Next time, watch his chest. Youâll detect movements easier that way.â
She scowled at him and drew her attention back to me. âWhat is a Guard doing in our room? Shouldnât he be out harassing Subjects?â
âCaptain,â he corrected. âIâm a Captain.â
Jess looked him up and down. âI wasnât speaking to you, now was I?â
âI donât have time for this right now.â He rolled his eyes impatiently. âKaren, shower and put new combat clothes on.â
âI thought Guards arenât supposed to directly associate with Subjects.â Jess stood next to me and crossed her arms.
Matthew took a deep breath. âIâm not a Guard. Iâm your Captain. Which also makes me a Subject.â His eyes flashed to a bright green and he pivoted one foot at a slight angle, causing the ground to shake softly. âNow move it!â
The command, deep with authority, reminded me of the guys when they would go from friend to weapon in an instant. I didnât bother asking questions. If he got the okay from Jack, I guess I had no choice but to listen.
I hopped in the shower and scrubbed the dried blood from my skin. I barely gave myself time to feel the waterâs heat massaging my body as it fell in steady beaded streams. The glow had completely vanished, but my eyes remained a vivid red. When I emerged from the steaming depths of the bathroom, Matthew was waiting impatiently at the door. He followed me down the short hall to my bedroom and waited outside until I came out, dressed and dry.
âReady?â
I just pushed past him.
He beckoned Jess forward with a short hand gesture.
