I24 Eugenia Place

1919 Beach Avenue

Henriquez & Partners 1990

The Eugenia steps back to preserve the Sylvia Hotel’s prospect of English Bay. It was named for developers Caleb and Tom Chan’s mother, but there is more to the narrative of this essay than a sentimental client and an allusion to how the Sylvia was named. The Eugenia is a metaphor, a memory of nature. The inverted cone-shaped entrance is like the root of a tree; the glazed bay that shoots up to the penthouse deck is the trunk. An Oregon pin oak grows from the deck. The historical precedent is the tree-topped, fourteenth-century Torre Guinigi in Lucca, Italy, but the memory evoked is of the old-growth Douglas-firs that covered the West End and the height to which they grew before the forest was logged in the nineteenth century; the concrete stumps in the garden symbolize what was left.
