Pluto and Charon

Pluto remains the only planet not visited by a spacecraft. Nonetheless, some information is available from telescopic observations, including detailed studies of the 1985 to 1990 series of mutual eclipses and transits (“mutual events”), stellar occultations, radiometric measurements, near-infrared spectra, and ground-based and HST images (see Plate 2). These observations provide reasonably accurate estimates of size, albedo, system mass, surface composition, atmospheric pressure (upper limits) and composition, and surface temperature, as well as crude albedo maps.15
