CLIMBING With close to 1,500 established routes going over extremely hard and featured sandstone rock with lots of cracks and face routes, the New River Gorge National River has become one of the most popular climbing areas in the country. Most of the routes are 5.9 or harder, meaning they are for advanced and expert climbers, but there are some good beginner spots, too, such as the Bridge Buttress and Junkyard Wall. The climbing season runs Apr.–Nov., with the park service recommending late Apr. to mid-June and mid-Sept. to late Oct. as the best times. New River Rock by Rick Thompson and New River Gorge Rock Climbs by Mike Williams contain information on almost every route in the gorge.

The rock cliffs surrounding Summersville Lake, especially those close to the US 19 bridge, and those rising above the Meadow River are also popular climbing places. New River Gorge, Meadow River and Summersville Lake Rock Climbers’ Guidebook by Steve Cater covers these routes.
