FOR FAMILIES Acadia National Park Junior Ranger Programs (207-288-3338) are the best thing going here for youngsters: First complete the activities in the Junior Ranger booklet, then join a ranger-led program or walk to receive a Junior Ranger patch. Books are for 7 and younger, and 8 and older; the senior ranger book for 18 and older contains much harder activities.

Family Nature Camp at College of the Atlantic (see previous page) offers one- and two-week programs, summer field studies for children, and a one-week session for families who live in dorms and spend days on field trips led by naturalists in Acadia National Park.

To Do

AIRPLANE RIDES Scenic Flights of Acadia (207-667-6527; mainecoastalflight.com), Rt. 3, Hancock County Airport, Trenton. Sightseeing flights in a Cessna 172 take four different routes over MDI.

Acadia Air Tours (207-667-7627; acadiaairtours.com), located at both the Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport and on the pier in downtown Bar Harbor, offers scenic airplane, biplane, and glider flights sunrise to sunset, by appointment, weather permitting. The biplane and the glider flights are extremely popular.

AMUSEMENT PARK Wild Acadia Fun Park (207-667-3573; wildacadia.com), 233 Bar Harbor Rd., Trenton. Open end of May–Labor Day. Water slides and splash pool, 18-hole mini golf, Indy-style go-carts, 32-foot rock climbing wall, slingshot trampoline, and water wars with water balloons and catapults.

BEER Atlantic Brewing Company (207-288-BEER; atlanticbrewing.com), 15 Knox Rd. in Town Hill (across from the Town Hill Market), has re-created an indoor–outdoor European brewery-pub. Daily tours and tastings, Memorial Day–Columbus Day; the barley wine is a wonderful thing to try, and so are the rest of the brews. Try The Knox Road Grille for its great BBQ next door; all-you-can-eat Saturdays.

BICYCLING The network of gravel carriage roads constructed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1915 lends itself particularly well to mountain biking. In Bar Harbor, Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop (207-288-3886; barharborbike.com), 141 Cottage St., is the oldest bike outfitter in town and still rents only bikes: mountain, tandem, and everything that goes with them. Acadia Bike (207-288-9605 or 1-800-526-8615; acadiabike.com), 48 Cottage St., rents mountain and hybrid bikes and offers a full bike shop for sales and service.
