The Air Force Museum at Sampson was established as a naval training station in 1942. It was here that more than 411,429 young men were taught to be sailors and then sent overseas to participate in World War II. This museum, created by the thousands of members of the Sampson WWII Navy Veterans organization, contains artifacts from the veterans, photos, porthole displays, guns, the ship’s bell from FDR’s presidential yacht Potomac, and other memorabilia. BIKING A bicycle path runs along both shores of the lake. The grade is gently rolling, and views are of the lake, fields, and farms.

Dresden/Dundee/Dresden Route: This 38.7-mile ride takes you along paved roads with some rolling hills. Start on Main St. in Dresden. Highlights are the Robert Ingersoll Museum, the wineries along the Seneca Wine Trail, FLX Wienery (for fabulous hot dogs), Dundee Historical Society, and the Windmill Farm & Craft Market (open Saturday). 800-868-9283

Geneva Skyline Loop: This 35.7-mile route is mostly paved, with some dirt roads. Start in Geneva. Highlights include Seneca Lake State Park, Smith Opera House, South Main Street Historic District, Geneva History Museum (where there are maps), Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station Grounds. 877-FUN-IN-NY

BOATING Captain Bill’s Seneca Lake Cruises are aboard the luxurious Seneca Legacy. Finger Lakes Water Adventures at Stivers Seneca Marine offers cruises on Seneca Lake on the double-decker Rose Lummis, a 1953 Mississippi riverboat. 315-789-5520; www.stiverssenecamarina.com

Schooner Excursions offers charter and day sails aboard the schooner True Love, which sails out of Seneca Harbor Park Pier in Watkins Glen, May through October. 607-535-5253; www.schoonerexcursions.com

MARINAS There are a number of marinas and launching areas around Seneca Lake. A&B Marina, Waterloo, is a full-service marina and campground, offering boat rentals, hoist, and dock installations, skis, kneeboards, and sales. 315-781-1755. Barrett’s Marine on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, Waterloo, offers a variety of launches, overnight slips, showers, restrooms, and repair services as well as a hydraulic hoist. 315-789-6605. Roy’s Marina, 3 miles south of Geneva, is a full-service facility, with rentals, fishing boats, pontoon boats, hoists, launch, dockages, and storage. 315-789-3094. Stivers Seneca Marine in Waterloo on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, off NY Rt. 96A, has a travel lift service, more than 75 boat slips, boat sales and repairs, and marine supplies. Stivers also rents paddle, fishing, and pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes, tubes and skis along with a four-bedroom/two-bath luxury houseboat. And don’t miss their Tiki Bar North with live music on some nights. 315-789-5520. Ervay’s Marina and the Village Marina are on the south end of the lake.

FISHING Seneca Lake provides excellent fishing grounds. For the latest fishing report, check with one of the local bait shops (such as Barry’s Bait and Tackle, NY Rt. 5 and US 20, Waterloo, 315-539-5341).
