There’s a Mount Doublehead near Jackson and another in the Squam Range. I’m talking here about the Doublehead northeast of Jackson. The rounded wooded summits have elevations as nearly identical as their contours: North Doublehead, 3,053 feet; South Doublehead, 2,939 feet.

I recommend this loop hike for the views and for the log cabin atop North Doublehead. The outlooks from the ledges are fine and sweeping. The Presidentials, the Carter-Wildcat Range, and the Saco valley are all seen from unusual angles. The Doublehead Cabin is so perfect it belongs in a museum. A U.S. Forest Service project built long ago, and an adjunct to the old ski trail, the cabin is as delicate as the mountain environment. It has been renovated and can be rented. For details about reservations, call or visit the Saco ranger district office on the Kancamagus Highway in Conway, 603-447-5448.

HOW TO GET THERE

The access road toward Doublehead leaves Jackson north of the stores. It’s the east section of NH 16B. (Don’t take NH 16B west of the stone bridge.) Drive up the hill, bearing right on NH 16B at a fork. From the hilltop you can look to your right across fields and woods to Doublehead. Drive down to the corner at Whitney’s Inn and turn right onto the Dundee Road. (NH 16B forks left.) Keep past the Black Mountain Ski Area and the Black Mountain Road on your left. Less than 0.5 mile from the Black Mountain Road, you come to the start of this hike’s climb: Doublehead Ski Trail parking area, also on your left, 2.5 miles from Jackson.
