Tripoli Road, Breadtray Ridge, Thornton Gap, Scar Ridge, Mad River—these colorful names from loggers’ parlance enliven maps of the country that surrounds this peak named for the famous Seminole warrior. Mount Osceola dominates the upper end of Waterville Valley. Viewed from the west, its 4,340-foot elevation appears as a single summit, but seen from the east along the Kancamagus Highway, the East Peak’s 4,156-foot shoulder enlarges the mountain.

HOW TO GET THERE

The most direct trail to the main summit begins at Waterville Valley’s northwest pass, Thornton Gap. From Campton, drive east on NH 49, 10 miles up the Mad River. Turn left, and drive past the access road to Tecumseh Ski Area. This Tripoli Road crests 4.5 miles from NH 49 at the 2,300-foot pass. About 200 yards beyond, the Mount Osceola Trail enters the woods on the right (north), where there is a parking area.

If you are coming from Exit 31 off I-93, drive the Tripoli Road 7 miles to the parking area on the left.
