3. How much of the morphological requirements can be placed in the seed, and how much in the subsequent gardening environment and regime (genericity versus specificity trade-offs);

4. How to stop the systems growing where necessary (Miller, 2004), potentially based on the mechanisms plants use to stop growing, which process can be triggered either by environmental conditions, such as winter, or by internally regulated developmental programmes (Leyser and Day, 2003):
