Black Feminist Epistemology serves as the theoretical framework of this study. This epistemology “encourages new techniques to study Black females because their experiences cannot be studied using the standard techniques of dominant practice” (Williams, Brewley, Reed, White, & Davis-Hanley, 2005, p. 183). As a result of their gender and race, Black women’s experiences are different from those of White men, White women, and Black men (Collins, 2000). Therefore, the investigation and interpretation of Black women’s dating experiences should not solely rely on the traditional White, male-dominated, theoretical frameworks. One must focus on “personal experiences and testifying as ways of establishing truth and creating knowledge” about the dating experiences of Black, female, doctoral students and faculty through their voices (Blue, 2001, p. 121). Henry (2008) asserts that “Black feminist ideas are also important in helping Black women to clarify their standpoints regarding the intertwining influences of race, gender and dating decisions” (p 18).

The remainder of this chapter is structured as follows: literature review, description of the sample and methodology, findings, discussion, and conclusion. The literature review will highlight previous studies on the dating experiences of Black women in the academy. Within these studies, I highlight the exclusion of the dating experiences of Black, female, doctoral students and faculty.
