Chapter 5

The Importance of Expectancy

God wants to do the extraordinary for every one of us. However, as we have seen, often He can’t because we fail to get in a position to receive.

So far, we’ve discussed several ways in which we can cooperate with God in bringing the extraordinary into our lives. We’ve said that we must go beyond the norm, and we must break some barriers in our lives. Also, we must stop thinking of ourselves as unworthy of God’s attention, and we must begin to see ourselves as the Bible sees us—as God’s special people.

Now 1 want to look at another important factor in our getting in position to receive the extraordinary: The importance of keeping our expectations high. Expectancy is vital, because the more you expect the extraordinary, the more you will see it.

“Something Told Me...”

God wants us to begin to expect the extraordinary in our finances. That’s why 1 have written this book: I want you to begin to expect things to happen to you financially that are out of the ordinary.

I want you to begin expecting to hear this phrase from other people often: “Something told me....”

For instance, at one of the churches where I was preaching this message, I told the congregation on a Friday night to expect to hear this phrase. Before the service the next night, the pastor told me that earlier in the day a lady who had been driving by the church suddenly pulled into the parking lot and came into the church bookstore. She was crying. The people in the bookstore thought she was in some kind of trouble. However she said “Something told me to bring this money here and I’ve never even been to this church before.” The pastor said, “We’ve never had anything like that happen to us before.”

Remember what I said in the last chapter: What God has done for others, He will do for you if you will only believe and expect Him to do it.

Expectation Is Not Based on Fantasy

Critics of “faith preachers” have accused us of building up people’s hopes. But we’re not basing this expectation on some kind of fantasy. Our hope is based on the Word of God. The Bible is a book of hope. It’s the God of hope whom we serve. Psalm 62:5 says, My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

I’m not endeavoring to build your hopes on fantasies. I’m endeavoring to build your hopes on “Thus saith the Lord.” The Bible says, Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper (2 Chron. 20:20).

Well, if you truly believe God, that will create expectation in your spirit.

You can’t truly believe God and expect nothing. You can’t say “I’m living by faith” without expecting something to happen. When you live by faith, you expect the miraculous all the time. You may not know how God’s going to do it, but you still expect Him to come through for you.
